Hook knife recommendations

Hey ya’all.

So, I do a moderate amount of hobbyist wood work.

I started after seeing some bowel carving…

…decided the hand instruments used cost too much for quality tools, and so I found cheaper / faster power tools to accomplish the same things

Anyhow, a tight bowl is hard to do. I don’t have a power tool for it.

I can do some bulk reduction with a drill press
Can refine the form some with a router….

But getting that perfect bowl shape…

I think I just have to have a good quality hook knife.

I’m trying to make some soup ladles

So, what suggestions do you all have for me?

Thanks

What kind of wood?

What kind of wood do you think this is? Do you think the edge boards are a different wood in the center panel on these drawers?

Keeper?

I know it’s a lower run star note (500k).

But am unfamiliar what sort of value that may have 🤷🏼‍♂️

Small Dish

Been working on this small dish as a gift for my parents. The idea is just a small bowl they could place in their dresser or night stand to put their rings or jewelry.

Their house out in the country burnt down last fall after a car somehow caught fire (unknown, no one is a smoker nor was a fire going).

My dad and I cut down one large burled branch from a large mulberry tree on the fence line of the house they’re living in now (a small house they own but normally rent out) while they rebuild. The bowl area is a bit more yellow as it was carved more recently than the rest of the wood which has oxidized more.

So many heirlooms and photos and memories were lost. My mom’s dad was a carpenter and so were many of her family members from long ago. I think the thing lost of most meaning was a low medium sized chest of drawers that probably had 100 drawers of varying sizes that once sat in her parents house and her grandmothers house before that which her great grandfather had made.

My dad was/is a general contractor (and is rebuilding his own house) like his father before him and he appreciates finer wood craft.

The minwax polycrylic still has a week of curing to do before I sand and polish it. I’ll give it to them as a house warming gift when they finish and move in as their house is rebuilt. I’m hoping it is something they can treasure and be a new heirloom.

3D Router

A local shop used their industrial level 3D router to carve this bowl for me for a nominal fee.

I was worried about ruining the wood by trying to make this shallow bowl myself.

I had this little block sitting around for a couple months and so, the exterior is more brown than the newly cut bowl.

It’s mulberry Burl and I’m at the beginning of doing a French polish.

It’s for a gift for my parents so i really want it to be top 👌🏼 . My intent is just a small night stand dish to place rings or jewelry in.

Mulberry Burl plate (question)

I didn’t actually turn this (I did this with a table planer, router, angle grinder and lots of sanding) but I thought this would be a good forum to ask advice :

I’m French polishing this, but I really would like it to be functional / usable….. like a serving plate (I think my hand makes it look small but it’s actually about the size of a large dinner plate).

I’ve read shellac doesn’t like water but you can coat with wax for a food safe water resistant coating.

Anyone have recommendations for that?

Mulberry Burl Dish

Almost complete. I cut down this tree. Planed it. Dried it. Now making things. This was done with a combination of a hand router and an angle grinder and lots and lots of sanding. I don’t have a lathe, but I think I managed to do a pretty good job and I’m proud.

Just need to spend a few days of shellac/french polish and then I’ll hit it with the polish

My youngest daughter loves to cook and is having a birthday coming up. I wanted to make her some sort of animal, a unicorn or a cat 🤷🏼‍♂️ and I found this idea on Google and copied it ….. a big stirring spoon. Probably not the best utensil for making the baked goods she likes the most to help make, but should be good for pasta and such.

Unfortunately she caught me making it for her, so , it won‘t be a surprise. I have to finish my coats of tung oil and curing and then give it a good burnish.
