Could the Dust in a Gulf Dust Storm Be Carrying Microplastics?

When a dust storm turns the sky orange, we usually think about sand and soil. But what else could be traveling in that dust?

Recent research has found microplastics in urban dust and airborne environments, raising a question for the Gulf: could dust storms be helping microplastics travel through the atmosphere?

We don't have the direct measurements needed to answer that yet. I looked at what recent studies can — and cannot — tell us about this possible pathway.

Do You Make Your Own Essential Oils?

If you use essential oils such as rosemary, peppermint, or lemon in your natural soap, I’d love to know how you usually get them.

I love to hear about personal experiences, For example, growing rosemary or mint, drying the plant material, and then trying to extract the essential oil using simple, inexpensive kitchen/home equipment rather than laboratory equipment.

📚 The Little Turtle and the Old Giraffe (Ages 4–8). 🐢🦒

Hi guys, as a first post in this community, I'm happy to share my new book.

📚 The Little Turtle and the Old Giraffe (Ages 4–8). 🐢

Does your child ever feel too small, too slow, or different from others?

In the heart of the African savanna, a little turtle named Tiko feels like he doesn't fit in. He's too short. He's too slow. But when he meets Zane, a wise old giraffe, he discovers an amazing truth: our differences make us special.

Do you use a preservative in your cold process soap?

I’ve seen different opinions about whether traditional cold process soap needs a preservative.

For those of you who have been making CP soap for a while:

Do you add a preservative to your cold process soap?

For example:antioxidant (such as ROE or vitamin E) to help prevent rancidity/DOS?

I'm mainly interested in hearing about your actual soapmaking experience, rather than theoretical opinions. Thanks!

As a soap maker, do you replace your water 1:1 with hydrosols (e.g., 100g water = 100g hydrosol?)

Hi everyone!

I'm currently exploring the use of hydrosols in my soap recipes. I'm curious about how the community handles this.

If a recipe calls for a specific amount of water (e.g., 100g), do you replace it entirely with 100g of hydrosol? Or do you use a different method to protect the delicate properties and scent of the hydrosol from the lye?

Would love to learn from your experiences, ratios, and any tips you might have.

Soap Makers: Do You Filter Your Lye Solution Before Use?

When mixing caustic soda (NaOH) with water, undissolved flakes can sometimes remain.(undissolved flakes can cause lye pockets in the soap) which degrade soap bar quality

As someone passionate about soap making, I always see a big debate around the choice of oils. I wanted to start my first post here with a quick poll to see what the community prefers, and we can discuss the science behind it in the comments!

Note: the answer in details will be in separate post

Which do you think yields a better quality soap bar?
