I mixed real-time Match-3 combat with RPG progression. My solo dev RPG, Eternal Dream: Guardians of Robu is now in Open Beta

Hi everyone!

I'm the solo developer of Eternal Dream: Guardians of Robu, a free-to-play RPG that mixes real time Match-3 combat with character progression, equipment builds and exploration, all set in a story-driven universe I've been working on for the past few years.

The idea behind the combat system is to keep players actively involved. Instead of waiting for turns or using auto-battle, you match gems in real time to charge attacks, cast abilities, heal and survive against monsters.

One of my biggest goals was making progress and equipment actually matter. Weapons, armor and accessories are not just bigger numbers; they can roll different bonus effects, meaning a new item can change your build and strategy.

You can also choose between different classes and abilities to match your preferred playstyle.

Some players may focus on attack, critical hits or faster abilities, while others may prefer defense, healing or improving their chances of finding better loot.

The Closed Beta phase already finished and the major issues found during testing have been fixed, but I'm still looking for more feedback from RPG players, so the game is currently in OPEN BETA!

I'd love to hear what you think about the combat, progression systems, art style or anything you feel could improve.

Thank you for checking it out!

Making the game was hard... but getting people to actually find it feels even harder. How did you get your first players?

Hi everyone!

I'm a solo developer and recently reached Open Beta for my RPG after working on it for the past few years.

The Closed Beta went well: a small group of players tested it, found some bugs and balance issues, I fixed what they found, and now the game is finally available publicly.

But I reached a completely different challenge that I honestly underestimated: Getting people to even know the game exists.

I started posting short gameplay videos on TikTok and Instagram, and while they get some views, most people just scroll away in the first one or two seconds.

It feels strange spending years building systems, balancing combat, creating content and fixing bugs... and then realizing that getting someone to stop scrolling for a few seconds is a completely different skill.

For developers who started from zero:

How did you get your first real players?

What actually worked for you? Reddit? TikTok / Instagram? YouTubers or streamers? Discord communities? Something completely different?

I'm not expecting some magic viral trick, I'm just interested in hearing what worked for real indie developers trying to find their first audience.

Thanks!
