How do I overcome a lack of practical experience when applying for entry-level tech roles?

Hi folks,

I'm preparing to enter the job market for entry-level IT and cybersecurity roles (aiming for remote EDT shifts).

I recently finished my graduate studies in IT and have some foundational security credentials. I also have a bit of short-term junior experience doing software and security testing.

I've been out of the workforce for about a year, so my main goal is to land something quickly and avoid a longer gap. My main issue is that my background is very heavy on academics and theory, but I don't have years of on-the-job tenure yet.

For anyone who has transitioned from academia to the workforce:

  • What is the best way to format a resume when your strongest points are academic assignments and degrees, rather than a long employment history?
  • During interviews, how do you successfully pivot the conversation away from a year-long employment gap, and focus instead on your ability to learn on the job?

I'd love any feedback on how to best position my resume. Thanks!

Need a guide or checklist for landing an entry-level remote cybersecurity job (Targeting 10:30 AM - 7:30 PM EDT)

Hey everyone,

I’m taking my CEH (Theory) exam in the coming months, and I urgently need a daily checklist or roadmap to land an entry-level remote role right after passing.

My Background & Situation:

  • Education & Experience: Master of Computer Applications (MCA). Completed an internship involving web dev and security testing. Built the front-end for an Intrusion Detection & Vulnerability Scanner.
  • The Hurdle: I have a solid grasp of the foundational concepts from the CEH modules, but I currently lack deep, hands-on practical experience.
  • The Plan: Land a job immediately after passing the theory exam, learn the practical side on the job, and prepare for the CEH Practical exam concurrently.
  • The Constraint: I’ve already taken a drop year. I absolutely cannot afford another gap in my profile, so getting hired quickly is my top priority.
  • Target Hours: Remote, specifically aligning with 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM Eastern Time (EDT).

What I’m looking for:

  1. What exact daily checklist or actionable steps should I follow to secure an entry-level remote role given my lack of hands-on experience?
  2. How can I best market my theoretical knowledge and internship experience to get my foot in the door?

Any direct guidance to help me execute this plan successfully would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oily, extremely sensitive olive skin — advice for redness, tanning & glass skin?

I have oily, olive-toned, extremely sensitive skin. I’ve consulted a dermatologist, but I’m still looking to explore other evidence-based approaches.

My main issue is that the moment I step outdoors, my skin becomes red and then appears tanned/darker, despite using mineral SPF 50+ PA++++. I’ve also tried several sunscreens without finding a satisfactory solution.

My goals:

  • Achieve a more even skin tone on my face and body
  • Reduce outdoor redness, tanning and pigmentation
  • Strengthen/manage my sensitive skin
  • Achieve smooth, healthy “Korean glass skin” without compromising my skin barrier
  • Control excess oil without over-drying my skin

What I’ve tried: Hyaluronic acid serums and moisturisers, along with multiple sunscreens. HA hasn’t made much noticeable difference.

I’m particularly looking for a lightweight moisturiser for extremely sensitive, oily skin that controls excess oil, doesn’t clog pores, irritate my skin, or feel greasy under sunscreen.

I’m based in an area where heat, humidity and strong UV exposure are major factors.

Would appreciate recommendations based on ingredients and formulation rather than hype, especially from people with similarly sensitive, oily skin. What has worked for you, and what should I avoid?

[Offering] English | [Seeking] Spanish

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a dedicated practice partner to help me improve my conversational Spanish. In return, I would love to help you push your English fluency to the next level—focusing on natural phrasing, advanced vocabulary, and speaking without hesitation.

What I’m looking for:

I want to build a zero-judgment space where we can make mistakes, correct each other, and grow. Whether you want to focus on grammar, pronunciation, or just casual fluency, I am happy to help you with your English while I practice my Spanish.

If you are serious about practicing and want a consistent partner, share your Discord ID in a DM.

Offering: English | Seeking: English (B2 -> C2 Conversation Partner)

Hi everyone, I’m Ethan Arnold!

I’m currently at a comfortable B2 level in English and am looking for a dedicated practice partner to help push each other toward C2. My main goal is to move past standard textbook English and focus on natural phrasing, advanced vocabulary, and speaking without hesitation.

What I’m looking for: Since I am offering English and looking for English, I’d love to find a fellow learner (or a native speaker who just loves good conversation) so we can practice together. I want to build a zero-judgment space where we can make mistakes, correct each other, and grow.

Why we should chat (The Vibe): I want to completely skip the awkward "how is the weather" and "what did you eat today" small talk. I am looking for someone who loves going down conversational rabbit holes. We can:

  • Debate hypothetical scenarios and "what-if" questions.
  • Discuss interesting ideas, concepts, or random facts we recently learned.
  • Just have unstructured, deep conversations about how the world works.

The Plan: Ideally, we can hop on a voice call once or twice a week for about 30–45 minutes.

If you are serious about improving your English and want a consistent partner to practice with! To break the ice, tell me in your message about one random topic you could easily talk about for 20 minutes straight without any preparation.

Offering Hindi (Native) | Seeking: English (USA)

Hi everyone, I’m Ethan Arnold! I’m a native Hindi speaker from India, and I’m looking for a native American English speaker for a consistent language exchange.

Here is why we’d be a great match (and why the time zone won't be an issue):

  • I am on a US-friendly schedule: I am a complete night owl. I usually study and work until 3:00 AM or 4:00 AM IST, which means I am wide awake and free exactly when it is afternoon or evening in the US. No scheduling headaches!
  • My English is already at B2/C1: You won't need to teach me basic grammar. We can jump straight into real, natural conversations. I am mainly looking to polish my fluency, pick up on natural American phrasing, and get comfortable speaking at a native pace.
  • What I offer you: I can help you with conversational Hindi, nailing the pronunciation, and understanding cultural nuances you won't find in textbooks. Whether you are starting from scratch or just need a practice partner, I am patient and happy to help you hit your goals.

If you are serious about practicing once or twice a week and think we'd get along, send me a DM! To prove you read this, let me know in your message what sparked your interest in learning Hindi.
