If you’ve taught a lot of adult students, what did your strongest or most successful adult students have in common?
What sets the successful ones apart from those who plateau?

I would appreciate suggestions for hobbies that my 67yr old mother could pick up to help with her memory and ultimately prevent dementia. She has started suffering from memory loss here and there and I would like to suggest her activities to do to keep it from worsening

I’m interested in picking up a fiber arts hobby and I’m trying to decide between sewing, knitting, and embroidery.
For those who have experience with one, two, or all three, I’d love to hear your thoughts:
What do you enjoy most about each hobby?
What are the biggest downsides or frustrations?
How expensive is it to get started and maintain?
Which is the most relaxing?
Which has the steepest learning curve?
Which gives the most practical/useful finished projects?
How portable are they?
How much time does it take before you can make something you’re proud of?
I’d also be interested in hearing from people who started with one hobby and later switched to another. What made you change, and which one ended up being your favorite?
Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences! I’m less interested in “which is best” and more interested in understanding what the day-to-day experience of each hobby is actually like.
אהלן, איפה ניתן לקנות תווים לפסנתר בארץ, הזמנה מאמזון/אתרים מחול בכללי נהייתה יקרה בטירוף מאז המלחמה, אם מישהו יודע אשמח.
I’d love to hear from people who have learned an instrument on their own.
- What was your experience like being self-taught ?
- Did you ever consider getting a teacher, or did you eventually take lessons at some point? What pushed you in that direction (or what made you stick with self-teaching)?
- Do you feel like reaching a solid/proficient level on your instrument is realistically achievable through self-teaching alone?
I’d love to hear people’s stories about how they connected with their instrument/s. What first made you choose it? Was it the sound/the look/hearing someone else play/family influence, or something else entirely?
How did you get started learning, and what was practice like in the beginning? Did it come naturally, or was it a struggle at first? Do you still play now, and if so, what keeps you coming back to it? If not, what made you stop?
