Hpw to adapt the new Netflix series Below to Dreadnauts, my nautical horror hack of Mothership

I've written some ideas about how to adapt the new Netflix series Below as a nautical horror adventure for my game Dreadnauts, a hack of Mothership. People who've been asking me to talk about the kind of adventure that fits Dreadnauts will have a lot to work with here. But be careful: it contains A LOT of spoilers for the series.

Trailblazers - A Dark Frontier Setting for Shadowdark RPG

Hey everybody!

My name is Luiz and I'm new to Shadowdark.

As I was reading the core book and Cursed Scroll #1, I started putting some ideas on paper for a dark frontier setting.

I'm calling the project Trailblazers, and I want to mix folk horror, isolated settlements, tropical wilderness exploration, lost expeditions, and the myths and legends of the colonial Americas.

Movies like The Witch, The Revenant, The Mission, Solomon Kane, and Aguirre, the Wrath of God are some of my main influences.

The core idea of Trailblazers is that the wilderness becomes the dungeon.

Instead of delving beneath the earth, adventurers venture into the Darkwild: a vast unknown territory of jungles, rivers, mountains, forgotten ruins, hidden wealth, and things that should have remained undiscovered.

Mechanically, I'm building it as a hexcrawl-first setting, which seems perfect for sandbox and West Marches campaigns. I'm planning random tables for weather, environmental features, travel challenges, encounters, discoveries, and treasures to make exploration feel dangerous and unpredictable.

Some other ideas I'm experimenting with:

• Gold grants XP, but treasure recovered from the wilderness can also corrupt body and soul.

• Black powder firearms are devastating, but unreliable in harsh frontier conditions such as humidity, rain, and river crossings.

• Rules for diseases, poisons, wilderness hazards, and resource management during long expeditions far from civilization.

• Four new exploration-focused classes, frontier-themed character options, new spells, and magic items.

The goal is to create a setting where every expedition into the unknown feels rewarding, dangerous, and a little unsettling.

Has anyone else experimented with wilderness-first Shadowdark campaigns? I'd love to hear what worked and what didn't.

Also, if anyone has recommendations for Shadowdark 3rd party content, or other books, movies, adventures, settings, historical sources, or anything else that might serve as inspiration, I'd love to hear them.

And if you'd like to learn more about the project, I've written a short article introducing the setting:

Thank you!
