ECE student here - are these skills worth spending my time on? Looking for honest feedback

I’m a 2nd-year Electronics and Communication Engineering student, and I’m trying to build a strong foundation instead of randomly learning a lot of technologies.

I’m currently planning to spend significant time on:

Digital Electronics

Verilog

Semiconductor Physics

Analog VLSI Design

C++ + DSA

Python

SQL

Linux

Operating Systems

My plan is also to build a few serious projects

So guys

1.Is this skill combination actually useful, or am I spreading myself too thin?

  1. Which skills should I prioritize most?

  2. Are SQL and OS worth learning for an ECE/VLSI-oriented career?

Any projects going on

Hi everyone!

I’m a 2nd-year ECE student and I’m looking to collaborate with people who are interested in building multidisciplinary projects.

I currently have experience with: • Circuit design & basic PCB design • Digital electronics • Basic analog electronics (designing simple amplifiers stuff) • C & Python • C++ (currently improving my DSA) • SQL

I’m especially interested in projects that combine electronics + programming + AI/data/software and involve actually building and experimenting rather than just learning theoretically.

Second-year ECE student: Should I invest time in research papers or focus entirely on skills and internships?

Hi everyone,

I'm a second-year Electronics and Communication Engineering student, and I'm trying to decide how to spend the next three years.

My goal is to get a strong engineering job after graduation. I'm not planning to pursue research as my primary career. However, I'm genuinely interested in understanding why and how systems work, and I enjoy connecting concepts across different fields.

My professor gave me this advice:

"If you're truly passionate about research and can manage your time well, then pursue research. Otherwise, focus on building strong technical skills, internships, and academics."

This has left me with two options.

Option 1

Maintain a good CGPA.

Build strong fundamentals.

Work on projects.

Complete internships.

Attend workshops and seminars.

Spend a small, consistent amount of time (for example, a few hours each week over the next three years) working toward publishing one quality research paper.

Option 2

Maintain a good CGPA.

Build strong fundamentals.

Work on projects.

Complete internships.

Attend workshops and seminars.

Spend all of my available time improving technical skills instead of doing research.

The reason I'm considering a research paper is not because I want a research career. I see it as an achievement that demonstrates strong fundamentals, curiosity, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills to recruiters, provided I can genuinely explain the work.

My questions are:

If you work in the industry or have gone through placements, which option would you recommend?

Does spending a small amount of time over three years on one quality research paper provide enough value to justify the time invested?

When recruiters see an undergraduate research paper, do they actually consider it as evidence of problem-solving ability, or do they care much more about projects and internships?

If you were in my position, would you invest that time in research or put all of it into technical skills?

I'd really appreciate advice from people who have experience in placements, R&D, semiconductor companies, embedded systems, or software engineering. Thank you!
