Looking for advice on running a West Marches campaign

I’ve gone through hours of YouTube vids but I’m looking for places to discuss ideas and tips and tricks. It seems that most posts in this sub are just advertisements for people’s games. So where should I look for actual knowledge?

The Úlfheðnar (a short story and homebrew mercenary)

The Úlfheðnar
Gunnar offered up a prayer to Odin and took a deep breath as he pressed his back into the mud in the side of a crater in the middle of what was known as “no man’s land”. It had taken him some time to crawl into this position and night was quickly approaching.

In the hazy daylight, gunfire and artillery ruled the trenches. Snipers on both sides were quick to dispatch anyone coming over the top… But at night the wolves prowled. War wolves are hulking monstrosities crafted in weapons factories in hell. Their heads are saws meant to cut paths through barbed wire. Their long slender claws flay men as easily as any sword. Their tough armor of infernal metal is as thick a tank’s.

For months, this war wolf in particular has terrorized the eastern flank of the papal force. They’ve even named him. Not that they would speak the name aloud. Still, for the Papal States to hire a pagan mercenary for this task… They must be desperate. The thought made Gunnar smile. This would be a good fight and, maybe, a good death.

In the distance, the artillery barrage shifted. The shells from the witches pushed back down the trench line to cut off retreat and reinforcements. The wolf would be on the way soon, cutting a path into the Christian’s trenches. As if on queue, the roar of the infernal saw blade against the razor wire made Gunnar’s neck hair stand on end.

And then it was above him. Molten metal dripped down its maw as it entered the crater with Gunnar, its claws looking for purchase in the blood-soaked mud. As it passed over him, Gunnar channeled everything he could and rose from his ambush spot, flipping the wolf into the middle of the pit with a howl. Gunnar matched it with a howl of his own. His eyes gleamed yellow in the night and his bones snapped and shifted into a new form. He grew in height and his thick beard and braided hair blended with the new hair growing over his body. His form swelled with powerful muscles as his hands grew claws and his face extended into a muzzle not unlike his newfound foe’s. Except where the assault beast in the mud had saws, Gunnar now had rows of razed sharp teeth.

The war wolf quickly righted itself in the slippery mud and squared with Gunnar. The two paused for only a moment, sizing the other up, before they each launched themselves at their prey. The fight was short but furious.

Claws flashed in the dim starlight and blood was spilled from both. Each time the war wolf opened a new wound, the blood spurred Gunnar to fight harder, to bite deeper. The saw blades found purchase on Gunnar’s left hand and tore it from his arm. But Gunnar’s teeth sank into the bit of flesh at the back of the neck and Gunnar crunched down until his opponent lay still.

Gunnar took the victory and the wolf’s left hand as a replacement for his own. As his wounds started to close and his form shrank back into that of a man, Gunnar sank back into the mud of the crater and offered a quiet prayer to Odin as he drifted to sleep.

While most do fight against the Heretic forces and the ice devils plaguing their homelands, some have no love for the Faithful and will happily join in on raids against Christian lands.

Monstrous PC Builds

2024 or 2014 rules are fine.

Premise of the one-shot is that the party are the monsters of the dungeon, fending off adventurers.

So, give me your Monster PC builds. I know goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears, kobolds, reborn, and minotaurs exist. But I want some builds that are outside the box. I’m talking Plasmoid Warlocks using Mask of Many Faces to be Mimics, Earth Genasi Monks as Gargoyles, Satyr Beast Barbarians / Undead Warlocks as Wendigo.

Got the glass secondhand so I had to make sure to reset it the best I could, level it, and then take it out to zero it.

Bore-sighted it at 50 yards just to get on paper. First and second shots are shown (second shot was just to confirm). Shot 3 was me being stupid and adjusting the wrong direction. Shot 4 was also me being stupid by forgetting how far I adjusted for shot 3 and then overcorrecting by double on the windage. Shot 5 was me deciding to take my time and walk it in slowly. Shot 6 was centered and shot 7 (upper right) was confirmation.

At about $4 a round, it was only about $28 to get the scope zeroed at 50 yards. Not bad, in my opinion.

I fully plan to zero out to at least 100 yards on my next outing. This trip was just about getting used to the rifle and getting the scope mostly tuned in to make future trips more efficient.

Also, ignore the lower left shot. That was a buddy who wanted to shoot his first 50 and was too excited to shoot his own target.

So, what distance do you zero your 50 to and why?

Soon as I had it zeroed, the wife stole it and wouldn’t give it back.

Super fun range day, though.

On a related note, anyone use a carry handle on their rifle? I’ve got my eye on a few hard cases that might work for this thing, but a more ergonomic way to lug this 40lb rifle down the range would be nice.
