DTW-Istanbul, how was it?

Flying to IST from Detroit in September on a 787 and I was wondering if anyone has flown it and what their thoughts on it were?

Also, has anyone had luck with being seated at an aisle or window seat at the counter? Flight is 3 weeks days away and lots of seats left (~120) but a seat selection is hefty when converted to my currency.

Thanks!

Accused at the border by CBSA and now I’m not sure what to do?

Background info: My gf, soon to be fiance & I live in border towns. I’m Canadian & she’s American, for the most part I travel over there every weekend for the last year or so with her visiting once in a while.

I’ve never had any issues at the border, never been pulled into secondary and never been questioned more than what my plans are and how do I know my SO. I declare every single item I bring back and have even paid customs when required.

This weekend as I cross back into Canada I get told to turn off my truck at the booth and asked what I have in my vehicle to declare. Pretty routine stuff and no problems at this point and I inform the officer I have left over homemade food from the gf & 2 personal vapes I purchased. He opens my trunk and asks whats there and thats when I inform him I have tennis rackets, beach chairs, a football, etc AND a car spoiler. This is the issue.

The officer questions the spoiler. I understand how it looks on his part that I might be attempting to avoid declaring it. I inform him that the part is actually Canadian and I’ve had it in my trunk for the last month and even been questioned by the Americans and when I tell them its for personal use I just haven’t gotten to it yet they’re pretty understanding and let me continue on my way.

My issue is that even after explaining to the officer that the part is originally Canadian and I’ve had it for about a month he goes on to say “its ironic and honestly it looks like you’re smuggling it”. This is what tripped me out since I didn’t have a receipt on me to verify I purchased it in Canada. I told the officer that the part is actually from a friends dealership/mechanic shop and offered I call him which the officer agrees to. The officer asks him to confirm the story and if he can produce a receipt to which my friend says yes but its 11pm on a Friday night and will need to wait until tomorrow.

Officer tells me to hang up and then goes on an absolute rant & lecture about me “playing these games” and that my career means I’m a professional and I should not be doing favours for friends like this because it’ll ruin my life not theres. The officer then says “I’m going to put this into the computer and let me tell you, the Americans are not as kind as us. They will search your car and flag you for years and possibly even tear your car apart. Do you want that?? What if they deny you entry to the US? What are you gonna tell your little sweet heart then? That you cant visit or apply for a green card anymore cause you did a favour for a friend?” Literally word for word lol, he then told me I’m good to go.

What confuses me is that he said he will put it in the system but then numerous times said he is doing me a courtesy and giving me advice he hopes I take. Now I’m absolutely confused, what did he put into the computer if anything? This car part is legit from Canada and now I’m sick to my stomach with the fact I might have issues with crossing as we will be applying for a green card soon, I’ll be flying out of that city in September to where both our parents live so we can get engaged.

Any advice? I’ll be crossing next weekend and will have the paper invoice on me in case of any questions and already moved the part out of my vehicle. I have new shoes in my back seat that are worth double what the part ($100 lol) is and the Americans never question any of my belongings but I know better now for the future. Thank you!

US spouse looking to sponsor Canadian citizen

Hey guys,

My partner is a US born citizen & I’m a Canadian, that lives and works in Canada. We live aprox 20 minutes from each other (border cities) so I have no legal status in the US other than using my privilege as a Canadian to cross over and visit her or vice versa.

We’re looking at getting married and getting the paperwork started for her to sponsor me so that I can relocate to the US and be there long term as we plan on doing travel contract work as healthcare workers before we settle down and purchase a home.

I’m seeing online it says it takes several years for this process to go through, is that accurate? Seems crazy to me that it takes that long. Is there any tips or advice anyone can offer?

New job offer, should I take it?

Hey guys, I’m stuck with choosing to stay where I’m at or leaving for a new clinic. Let me know what your opinions are since I would really appreciate it. I have 6 years of experience with the last 3 being at my current clinic. I’m based in Canada so the numbers might seem odd for my US friends.

Current Job: $44/hr working 4x10s and 3 weeks PTO + flexible with taking additional days throughout the year. Clinic is a high volume clinic with 15 minute bookings and each PT having a dedicated PTA which helps but still leads to bouncing around and a lot of paperwork. Clinic owner no longer practices and mainly operates his clinics, administration has a lot of leeway with bending backwards for patients to squeeze them in even if it’s at our expense. Overall I’ve become less and less happy here due to that and other things. The 30 minute commute doesn’t help either.

New job offer: It’s a new clinic that’s been open for about 5 months now. Clinic owner is the only PT as of right now and he’e working 12 hour days as he is busier than expected and looking to bring on a new PT earlier than he anticipated. He is currently seeing approx 15 assessments a week. He has his sports designation & teaches at a PT program so seems like someone I could learn from. The position it’s self is a contractor position with a 45-50% split) Ax are 1hr $110 & Tx are 30-45’ $90). Full control over schedule & hours and time off. The clinic is in a newly built medical building where there is a paediatric doctor that refers lots of patients as well as a family med practice that will open soon and drive further referrals. No worker’s compensation or MVA. Clinic is also 5 minutes away from home. I’ll be the sole concussion practitioner as well. A sports dietician & sports massage therapist are already on the team with plans to grow into the new facility as its fairly big with more clinicians in the future.

The one thing that scares me is leaving a stable income for uncertain, but possibly much higher income. At 85% utilization with a 45% split I can expect $128,000 and as long as I’m making $100,000 I’ll be happy. I have the added benefit that I also work at the hospital picking up casual shifts on my days off which supplements my income and i could possibly add more if I start at the new clinic part time to offset any gaps in my schedule. Lastly, I’m licensed in MI and expecting to join my fiancé in a year (we live in border towns) which makes me feel like this is a good opportunity to try the clinic as I was planning on leaving my old one regardless once I have work authorization in the US.

What do you guys think? Please feel free for any input or if you need additional information.

Estimate on this cheat meal?

Promised my girl a nice cheat meal after cutting for a month and we ended up having a fresh strawberry lemonade, fried walleye sandwich, detroit style cheesesteak, and garlic cilantro fries! We each had a half of each other’s sandwich and I’ll post below what the menu (detroit 75) says is in the sandwiches

- Cheese steak sandwich: Ribeye, sirloin, provolone and Swiss cheeses, roasted mushrooms and peppers, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, sweet pickled jalapeños, aioli, house-made vinaigrette on a freshly baked sesame roll.

- Lake Erie Walleye. Lettuce, tomato, pickles, sweet pickled onions, and house-made Old Bay tartar sauce on a freshly baked soft roll.

- Hand-cut russet potatoes, triple fried, freshly chopped garlic and cilantro served with house-made roasted jalapeño ketchup

- Squeezed locally grown strawberries and lemons (large)

I’m down about 7lbs on an aggressive cut and this cheat meal was absolutely worth the wait. I’m just pretty curious what something like this would be calorie wise though.

Canadians that do travel in the US?

Hey guys, I’m just wondering and wanted to confirm your non taxable income is honoured by the CRA (our version of the IRA).

I heard that even if you are paid a good chunk of your contract through non taxable stipends that the CRA may still tax it? If it matters I’ll be planning on spending the majority of the tax year travelling/working in the US but will most likely continue to use my Canadian address for my residence even though I wont be there for most of the year.

Is travel PT much harder than regular work?

Hey guys if I’m a PT with about 5 years of experience, mix of outpatient MSK & inpatient rehab, how much of a challenge would I find travel PT to be?

My nursing friends always talk about how with travel you’ll always be given tougher assignments, be understaffed and possibly have more patients than other nurses. Do you find this is similar to travel PT?

Any difference in practice would be heavily appreciated! I’m excited to jump into travel but don’t want to be caught off guard with it. Thank you!
