I’ve been thinking about moving out and have been browsing apartments lately. I’ve noticed that rent for a decent 2-bedroom place seems to start at around R12k, especially around Cape Town.

It got me thinking: is it better to rent or to buy (get a bond)?

For some context:

\- I’ve never lived anywhere other than home.
\- We currently stay in the Blouberg
\- I’m still trying to understand the pros and cons of renting vs owning, especially from a financial perspective.

For those who’ve done either (or both):
\- Why did you choose to rent or buy?
\- Do you regret your decision?
\- What would you recommend for someone moving out for the first time? (I don’t have kids if that’s necessary information ??)

I’m planning to buy my first car before the end of the year and I’m trying to understand what would be a sensible choice.

I’m looking for an automatic fr** **I’m not considering manual.

I’m based in Parklands and I work in Kalk Bay about 3 times a week, so I’ll be doing a fairly long commute. I’m trying to calculate the real cost of owning a car, including petrol, insurance, servicing, tyres, and maintenance not just the monthly instalment.

My original budget idea was around R250k, but I’m now thinking it may be smarter to aim closer to R180k–R200k so I have some room left for insurance, petrol, servicing, and unexpected costs.

I’m a first-time car buyer, so I’d appreciate advice on the following:

- Is buying a second-hand automatic a good idea for a first car?
- What year range should I be looking at? For example, 2019+, 2020+, 2021+?
- What mileage is reasonable for this budget?
- Which automatic cars are reliable and affordable to maintain in South Africa?
- How much should I realistically budget monthly for petrol, insurance, servicing, and maintenance?

I just want something automatic, reliable, safe, fuel-efficient, and not too expensive to maintain.

Cars I’ve been thinking about include things like a Suzuki Swift, Suzuki Baleno, Toyota Starlet, Hyundai i20, Kia Rio, or similar, but I’m open to suggestions 🙌🏾

I realized my original post may have given the impression that I’m looking for a relationship, but that’s not really where my head is at right now.

Hi everyone,

We recently took our 13-year-old dog Milo to the vet after noticing worsening behavioural changes and mobility issues. The vet diagnosed her with arthritis and canine dementia, and also advised that she is nearing end-of-life and likely in ongoing discomfort.

After discussing her quality of life, we’ve sadly decided that euthanasia may be the kindest option for her.

We’ve never gone through this process before, so I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with:
what the procedure is like, approximate costs,
and anything you wish you knew beforehand.

She still has a follow-up appointment next week, but we’re trying to prepare ourselves emotionally and practically.

Hi everyone, I hope you guys are good👋🏾

I recently got a new job and I’m already feeling pressure around “black tax” and family responsibilities.

For context, I already contribute at home:
- electricity
- groceries
- dog food, wash services, and clinic visits
- sending my mom money
- cleaning and helping around the house

The issue is that now conversations are starting around house renovations, and it feels like my income is already being allocated before I’ve even had the chance to stabilise myself.

I still need to:
- get driving lessons
- get my license
- save
- eventually get a car
- build independence for myself

What’s frustrating me is not helping my family. I understand helping family. It’s more that there wasn’t really a conversation like:
“When would you realistically feel comfortable contributing to something this big?”

It just became an expectation.

As the youngest, I sometimes feel like my boundaries or long-term plans aren’t taken seriously because people assume I’ll “figure it out” or sacrifice my own goals later.

I don’t want to become resentful, but I also don’t want to delay my own life before it’s even started.

How do you balance supporting family while still building your own future without feeling guilty?
