👋Welcome to r/SafewayWorkers - Introduce Yourself and Read First!

Hey everyone! I'm u/EzMrcz, a founding moderator of r/SafewayWorkers and Safeway Worker in NorCal. I have 16 years with the company and spent 13 years as a manager before stepping down and joining the union. I see a lot of opportunity to improve both our unions and the companies we work for by us workers coming together and demanding a seat at the table. Private Equity and Business Unionism seem to be ripping the soul out of an industry I have really loved to be a part of. I see the personality and human connection to our relationship with the food supply being stripped away and that has pushed me to decide to get more active as a worker and union member.

This subreddit was created as a moderated alternative to r/Safeway for workers wanting a more productive space to discuss and bitch about work and maybe how to make it better.

What to Post

Post anything that you think the community would find interesting, entertaining, or inspiring. Feel free to share your thoughts, photos, or questions about working conditions, union and non-union differences, management and employee relations, whatever.

Community Vibe

Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting. We're all in this together and this is one area of life where we share a commonality. Those are harder to find in these times. Spam and trolls and anyone whose primary intent is to sow division and discord will be invited to return to the fertile grounds of r/Safeway

How to Get Started

  1. Feel free to introduce yourself in the comments, but I understand why some prefer to remain anonymous.

  2. Post something today! Even a simple question can spark a great conversation.

  3. If you know coworkers that would enjoy more community, invite them to join.

It's kind of wild what we can do when we come together and decide to do it. This power extends beyond r/SafewayWorkers and into our workplaces and communities as well. Solidarity, fellow workers.

Cooking the books?

Anyone else notice that since the Associate App has come into existence that it seems like they’re fudging the numbers on when you clock in and clock out? I’ve decided to stay a couple of minutes past my time and when I logged into the app it said I clocked out two minutes prior? Keep an eye on your time, I wanna make sure if Safeway is trying to take away time from us, that we’re catching it and holding them accountable. I know I’m gonna start tracking every single clocking on my end.

After receiving reports of spam the SW mod team has made the decision to ban user VeronicaBooksAndArt from the server. If you are a Safeway Worker and would like to help make the subreddit a more productive place to discuss and organize around our working conditions please volunteer to join the mod team.

Flair ✊

The idea behind this subreddit is that it's ran and built by Safeway workers!

To that end, is there flair that would add to the flavor of the subreddit?

Some suggestions have been different departments, different unions, or different regions of the country. What do you think?

Welcome

Nobody likes change. It's hard. But sometimes, we decide it's necessary. Welcome to the Safeway Workers subreddit.

Maybe you enjoy the vibe of the main Safeway sub, but if you're interested in a more direct connection with your coworkers, focused on organizing to improve our working and living conditions, I hope this space can become that.

The goal is to have a team of volunteer moderators that are vetted Safeway workers.

If you're a current or retired employee, welcome!

Solidarity in the struggle Safeway siblings. ✊

Any Interest in a Safeway Workers' Subreddit?

Yoyo, it's shitty having to watch someone actively kill this subreddit like they did the Vons subreddit, so I come around less often than I would like. Would anyone be interested in a moderated Safeway Workers subreddit?

The goal would be to give us Safeway workers a space to organize against the pressures of the company and to rebuild our union, the UFCW, into a militant fighting union.

Ideally we would have volunteer workers acting as moderators to help keep the conversation focused on workplace and life issues tied to being a Safeway worker.

It's hard for me to gauge interest in this topic, as some seem eager to find collective solutions to our problems, others just want to vent (I feel THAT), and then there's Veronica, all up in everything being incomprehensible and useless.

Update: r/SafewayWorkers exists with 1 additional volunteer moderator so far, if you're interested in helping with moderation reach out, otherwise let's see what happens!
