is the deli department miserable at every store?

I currently work in the publix deli. Did my research when I got interviewed and saw everyone complaining about it online. Took the job out of desperation. Been working there for about a year, yeah it sucks, all the usual reasons. I am at the low end of our pay scale because prior to this I had no food service or customer service experience. I want to jump ship to somewhere that will pay me more, but I don't want to "throw away" what i've learned the past year because if it wasn't for all the shit that sucked there's a lot of things I like about this job. Upon starting my research on other stores in my area I feel pretty bummed. Seems no matter the grocery store chain the deli has a bad reputation. Is there just something fundamentally flawed about how the grocery store deli functions ?

has anybody ever received training in the deli?

i'm so fr. i've been here a few months. today i was reflecting on how much more confident i am at my job, and the complete lack of training i got in the beginning. obviously, there are things they do train for because they have to like slicing and kitchen. i'm talking about when you first get hired and start off on sub shop / hot case has literally anyone received more than the most basic here's where our stuff is now do you know how to make a sandwich ? cool watch me make 1 sub and then you're on your own type training. even after learning these positions on my own i got thrown into kitchen help and production the same way. help with this, oh you've never done it ? here's maybe a 30 second to a minute long explanation now figure it out. i have learned everything i know through copying what my coworkers do and asking around. i picked it up fast and consider myself very competent but if you quizzed me on the proper way to do everything i would fail because i only know the way i've taught myself.

is it normal for hours to drop after training?

got hired in the deli at the start of july. started out working 30-36 hour weeks. new schedules coming out are giving me only 20-25 hours. i want to ask before i ask my manager about it because i feel silly

  1. is it just normal for hours to drop like this when you no longer are considered in training ? it no longer says training on my daily schedules

  2. is it just the time of year now that we're going out of summer ? maybe less hours to give ?

Trying to get hired, what would you do?

21F open availability and I live a 10 minute drive from the Publix I want to work at. Submitted application online and went into store a few days later. Store manager was on vacation, talked with temporary customer service manager and he printed out my application for the store manager. Come back exactly a week later to follow up with store manager and apologize for not calling beforehand to make sure he was there last time. Have a decent chat. I say i'm mostly interested in cashiering, but he says deli and bakery are hiring. I need a job so I muster all the enthusiasm I can to say I would be happy to gain new experience in either of those departments. We talk about hours availability and distance to the store. He writes down my name and phone number, tells me they're in a hiring period, promises to call me in a few days. It's been 6 days no call. What would you do?

  1. Is this an indicator that for whatever reason they don't want me?

  2. Is it overly pushy to show up to the store again? If not what do I even say when there?

  3. I tried to call the store today to follow up because it felt less overbearing, but customer service wasn't answering the phone. Would continuing to try and call in be a better idea?
