Palm Springs downsides?

I'm asking more for those who moved from elsewhere. What are the things that disappointed you about PS once you moved here?

From my short experience, I know about the ungodly summer heat, the terrible condition of a lot of streets in the city of PS (some almost rivalling Detroit!), lack of good Greek diners, the wind, etc. But what are some of the OTHER things I need to consider before moving here?

I'm looking through real estate options, reading up about specific HOA's, looking for places WITHOUT golf courses, avoiding leased land, etc. etc. But, I'm sure there will be things I don't consider, and I'd like to hear what those were from you.

Palm Springs and snow.

I'm researching moving to the PS area; I'm from upstate NY, and grew up in snow. I learned to drive in it, too. I've had a set of 4 mounted snow tires to swap onto my car for every car I've owned since the mid 90's. I'd like to see some snow once in a while, but I kinda doubt it's worth brining my winter tire set along.

Do any of the roads in the mountains get snow in the winter in any great amount? I know that Tahoe gets a lot, but that's hundreds of miles away and trust me, you don't want to drive a thousand miles of dry roads with a set of snows on your car. So, can anybody confirm that, no, I will NOT need them out there? I'll probably get a set of good cable chains, though, just in case.

I'm assuming that I-10 never gets snowed in? At least not like the Grapevine does?

I still cross-country ski (gave up downhill because of the cost. and telemark because my thighs just can't handle that anymore), but was hoping there might be some XC-skiing somewhere in the mountains?

Transplant nephrology in the Palm Springs CA area?

I'm considering retiring to the Palm Springs area, and I'm 2+ years post-transplant. Until know, I've been treated by the Nephrology department at a major northeastern university hospital since stage 3, and have not dealt with anybody outside that system all the way through dialysis, transplant, and post-transplant.

However, Palm Springs does not have such an institution, but there is at least a large Nephrology group which I know nothing about. Also, the nearest "big" city seems to be Riverside about 60 miles away, with San Diego about 120 miles. Maybe there is a "teaching hospital" in Riverside?

Until now, all my doctors, surgeons, and pharmacists have been a quick 5 minute drive away, so this is kinda the biggest issue I have with this possible move. Can anybody tell me what services there are like?
