Pontianak at Marina Barrage? Netizens amused by 'sighting' during Hungry Ghost Festival

Hungry Ghost Festival has just begun, and there's already a 'spooky' sighting in Singapore — though this one seems to have left netizens more amused than terrified.

In a TikTok video posted by user Jovan on Saturday (Aug 15), a kite resembling a pontianak could be seen soaring in the skies above Marina Barrage.

Sporting long, messy black hair, a white dress and glowing red eyes, the kite bore an eerie resemblance to the popular mythical spirit.

Why older men may be particularly vulnerable to suicide in Singapore

SINGAPORE: Day after day, it was the same routine for him after he retired. A swim each morning and watching television for the rest of the day.

Occasionally, he would bring his prized birds to a pet shop in Clementi, where he chatted with fellow bird enthusiasts over coffee.

I think he felt that life in Singapore was very monotonous,” Joseph, his son, told CNA.

"He just kept saying there was nothing to do," he added.
At 85, Joseph’s father died by suicide.

Joseph's father was among a group that experts said deserves greater attention: older men.

According to Singapore’s latest suicide statistics released by the Samaritans of Singapore (SOS), older men accounted for three in four suicides among those aged 60 and above in 2024. Of the 120 deaths in that age group, 90 were men and 30 were women.

Owner horrified to find beloved dog's body dumped into rubbish bin after paying for pet cremation

A grieving pet owner was enraged after finding his deceased pet dog's remains dumped inside a rubbish bin near a HDB block despite having paid for a pet cremation service.

Liu Jianping (transliterated), a 46-year-old secretary, and his wife were the owners of a female dachshund named Kimi since 2010, reported Shin Min Daily News.
It was 16 years old when it died on the morning of July 19.

Liu told the Chinese newspaper that given his dog's long life, he was not too sad and searched online on how to properly handle his dog's remains.
He reportedly found a company called Express Pet Cremation that specialises in pet cremation, and would scatter one's pet's ashes at sea.

"One of their male employees came to my house early that morning to pick up (Kimi's) body, put it in a bag and left," said Liu.

Broken by years of parental pressure, depression and grief, she's learning to heal – one batch of brownies at a time

As Ms Jessica Tan smiled and posed for my colleague's camera in her family kitchen, her mother drifted in and out of the room, proudly photographing her daughter on her smartphone. It was very Kris Jenner – matriarch of the Kardashian brand – and I half-expected her to proclaim, "You're doing amazing, sweetie".

At some point, Ms Tan's mother bustled into frame, insisting on removing a bunch of bananas she felt were spoiling the background.
