What Were the BLs That Pulled You Into the Rabbit Hole?

Tell me your firsts in the BL/queer genre 👀

These were my first entries into different parts of Asian BL media:

Dramas

  1. China: Addicted (2016), Beloved Enemy (it was censored into a bromance)

  2. Korea: Where Your Eyes Linger

  3. Thailand: My Bromance (2016 drama)

  4. Taiwan: Your Name Engraved Herein

  5. Japan: Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard

Novels

I have only read chinese BL novels so far, and my first one was Beloved Enemy.

Manhwa: Love or Hate

Manga: Hidamari ga Kikoeru (I Hear the Sunspot) was my first BL manga

Manhua: Saye/Run Wild

Honestly, all of these feel special to me because they were my gateway into the BL/queer genre across different asian countries and mediums. Looking back at them now feels really nostalgic.

What were your first BL/queer dramas, novels, manga, manhwa or manhua?

Soul Mate : BL or Just another Bromance?

What an emotionally intense ride this drama was. Soul Mate is not a typical BL and its not just another bromance either, its something much deeper and it truly lives up to its title.

Both male protagonists are deeply broken people, carrying emotional scars and trauma from their pasts. The way they slowly come together, understand each other without needing many words, and heal through each other’s presence is what makes Soul Mate such a beautiful and touching drama. Their bond genuinely feels beyond just love, it feels like two souls finding comfort in one another.

One of the best things about the drama is how naturally the side characters are woven into the story. Their individual stories never feel unnecessary and instead add more emotional depth to the overall narrative. I especially loved the supporting characters here. Whether it was Ryu’s parents, his friend Sumiko or even Arata, his best friend who had crush on him, every character felt layered and meaningful. Their emotions, struggles and relationships all contributed to making the story feel richer and more human.

The drama was also shot across multiple overseas locations but it never feels like those locations were used just to show off visuals or budget. Instead, every place feels emotionally connected to the story and the characters journeys which makes the cinematography feel immersive rather than flashy.

The acting by Ok Taecyeon and Hayato Isomura was absolutely phenomenal. There were so many scenes that made me emotional and the final episode genuinely made me cry. That alone says a lot about the strength of the acting, direction and storytelling. Both actors perfectly captured the loneliness, pain and warmth of their characters.

The ending is technically a happy one since they reunite and confess their feelings but there is still a lingering sadness to it that stays with you even after the drama ends. It feels bittersweet in the most beautiful way possible.

Overall Soul Mate completely lived up to my expectations and was absolutely worth the wait.

9/10.

My Thoughts on Filing for Love So Far....

This drama just keeps getting better with every episode. Its really one of the most unconventional office romcom in the kdrama space right now.

Instead of following the usual formula, cold, rich CEO ML with a tragic past and a bubbly, naive female employee, this show flips everything. The FL is the boss, yet there is no forced traumatic backstory to justify her personality. Its refreshing.

Even the ML breaks stereotypes. He is not emotionally distant or trying to win her over with money. Having grown up with his mother and three older sisters, he is emotionally aware, sensitive and reacts to situations with depth. In many ways, he takes on traits usually given to FLs in traditional romcoms. Meanwhile, the FL is sharp, rational and highly capable.

The workplace cases are another strong point. The drama explores office affairs and misconduct with realistic lens:

E1 - The first case (an extramarital affair between colleagues at the same level) resulted in uneven consequences based on perceived value within the company.

E2 - The second case dealt with power imbalance, leading to the senior being fired.

E3 - The third case, despite being a false accusation, still led to the dismissal of a lower value employee.

E4 - The fourth case involved outright assault, and the perpetrator was fired accordingly.

Each conclusion reflects real world factors like hierarchy, power dynamics, and corporate priorities.

As for the leads, their relationship is developing very naturally. The ML starts off irritated with FL but gradually begins to see the FL in a different light, especially as he understands her motivations, reasons, like when she reveals that modeling for art classes is her way of feeling free and able to breathe.

The second leads are more layered than expected. The SML isnt actually having an affair, despite initial impressions. He is married and hasnt crossed any lines with SFL yet, its SFL who is throwing herself on him, currently she is kind of unlikable but i need to watch more of her to know more about her .

Overall this drama is surprising me by breaking conventions at every step.

Also, credit to tvN, they have been experimenting a lot lately. Even when working with familiar concepts, they are constantly trying new approaches without losing essence of what makes kdramas, THE KDRAMA, whether in shows like Our Unwritten Seoul, Pro Bono or Undercover Miss Hong etc. While other broadcasters are sticking to the safe formulas, tvN seems more willing to challenge itself and its clearly working off for them. Their upcoming lineup looks promising too.

Bloom Life : Beautiful Love Letter to Kashgar’s Culture, Music & Romance

Title: Bloom Life

Cast: Li Landi, Guo Jun Chen, Qiu Tian, Mukerrem Qeyser

Screenwriter & Director: Qin Hai Yan

Original Platform: CCTV, iQIYI

Episodes: 8

Duration: 45 mins

Genre: Life, Romance, Youth, Healing

Set in Kashgar, Southern Xinjiang, Bloom Life is basically a healing slice of life drama about three women who are all struggling with different things in life while trying to chase their own happiness. One returns to her hometown after losing her father and slowly starts reconnecting with her roots, another wants to protect and continue her family’s traditional craft, while the third dreams of dancing freely despite the pressure placed on her by family and society.

What makes the drama special is the way it blends all these personal stories with the culture and everyday life of Kashgar. It never feels forced or overly dramatic. Instead, it feels very natural and comforting, like you’re quietly spending time with these characters, watching them laugh, struggle, heal and slowly grow into better versions of themselves.

After getting emotionally attached to these characters and their journeys, i can honestly say Bloom Life turned out to be something really special. The drama felt heartfelt, comforting and genuinely beautiful from start to finish. Every episode had so much warmth and emotion in it that by the end, it easily became a 10/10 drama for me.

I personally loved both couples but Laili and Farhat’s story completely stole my heart. Even though i liked the main lead couple too, they still felt somewhat closer to a typical cdrama pairing. Their story was unique as well but since they werent originally locals of the Kashgar region (Souther Xinjiang), Laili and Farhat’s romance felt much more authentic and deeply connected to the culture of the place. Thats why i ended up loving their relationship even more. Honestly, i would absolutely watch an entire cdrama centered only around them.

One of my favorite parts of the drama was whenever Farhat sang local folk songs from the region. Those songs carried such a beautiful turkish/central asian vibe and added so much soul and cultural richness to the story.

What i also loved was how every female lead had her own meaningful journey, deeper message and personal struggles to overcome. The drama didnt just beautifully showcase an underrepresented culture, it also delivered emotional depth and life lessons through its characters. Even many supporting characters had their own quiet stories and emotions, which could be noticed in smaller moments and scenes, even if the drama didnt explore them in complete detail. That made the world feel alive and realistic.

Overall Bloom Life gave me everything i expected and even more, beautiful storytelling, meaningful character arcs, emotional depth, stunning aesthetics and a heartfelt portrayal of Kashgar's culture. This drama truly had it all.

A solid 10/10 masterpiece for me.

CCTV, please continue making more dramas like this.

(If you liked this drama then i would also recommend To the Wonder, which explores the Northern Xinjiang region. It is also produced by CCTV and iQIYI to promote Xinjiang culture. Its a mini series with only 8 episodes but its beautifully made and worth watching.)
