Common asl mistakes or pet peeves to avoid as a beginner

Hello! I’ve posted on here a few times about more specific questions, but I’m curious, what’s something that hearing people/people new to sign often do that we should try to avoid?

I’m talking about anything- grammar, expressions, choice of signs, etc.

How do I make sure he isn’t bored?

My goldfish is 8 years old this year and is living alone in a 30g tank. I got him when I was in school; he was a class pet for the first part of his life, living in about a gallon tank with another goldfish!

I just watch him swim around all the time and think to myself… that’s SO boring. He has several plants, mainly anubius and propagated pothos lining the top, but he doesn’t really take any particular interest to them. He doesn’t show signs of distress or anything like that, he’s pretty chill actually, but is there anything I can do for him to make him have fun?

I think tank mates, given his history and love for sucking up crud, are out of the picture + I don’t have many (if at all) ethical breeders close by!

Suggestions? This is a silly question but I do love this little guy <3

Song & artists recommendations with similar vibe, sounds, or messages.

I’m an avid Lana Del Rey & Lorde fan and I dabble in Ethel Cain. I love that mid 2000s “popular-indie” melancholy feel. Things that may sound sad but are not explicitly sad and things that are sad but don’t sound so. I am a hopeful person though, so I also like music to embody that. Kinda of tumblr-esque but authentically so, not just a recreation of 2015 era music.

Hopeful, melancholy, nostalgia, depth, experimental, is what I look for!

I do not like modern country or what is nicknamed “dad rock” or “divorced dad music.” But otherwise I am open! I typically prefer female artists but not always.

I eat ice cream every night. (Encouragement)

I eat ice cream every night and have for like 3 weeks straight. I don’t have guilt. I don’t have shame. I just have a bowl of ice cream and it’s very good.

I’ve tried all different kinds, s’mores is one of my favorites. I had it almost every other day of vacation early this summer. I had some at 10pm with my sister last week... twice. I had some about 15 minutes ago, a new flavor.

Ice cream is a normal, not scary, not morally bad thing nowadays. If now me told past me this a few years ago, or after a relapse a few months ago, she would’ve said “I thought we hated ice cream? That’s what we always said!” And I can only say- well that was a lie then and it would be a lie now.

Go on an ice cream date with your siblings, pick up a new flavor at the store out of curiosity, go somewhere local and maybe even a little expensive- it’s all okay.

I don’t like music much anymore. Coincidence?

I’ve been on Prozac a few times off and on, and I’d say each time I’m on it I’ve liked music less than when I was off of it. It doesn’t interest me, I find most of it kinda boring or sounding worse than before. I’m not emotionally dulled at all, I know that’s a side effect, I’m actually really emotionally in tune I’d say!

The medication works pretty good for me, so I genuinely don’t care that music now sucks, I just find it odd and funny because during my bad times I would constantly listen to music. Now I’m a podcast girl! Has anyone else experienced something similar? A side effect that is neutral but really strange?

Thoughts on initialized signs?

Right now I’m learning through Dr. Bill Vicars on ASLU/lifeprint and each lesson has a discussion. One discussion topic I saw was initialized signs Vs non-initialized which really interested me because I had never heard the term and because I’m a huge fan of etymology. I wanted to ask members of the Deaf community for their opinions on the subject.

Dr. Vicars explained why it is significant to some people and thinking through others’ perspectives; I could totally understand the annoyance. So what are your opinions if you don’t mind sharing?

Also, would some of you guys be up for discussing the questions from his lessons if? I don’t have a class or anything right now, I’m learning on my own but plan to do in person lessons/events when I move to a bigger city soon!

Question About SEE/PSE/ASL for people in the Deaf community

I’ve really been trying to dedicate time recently to truly learning sign language and all of the sources I use have been made by Deaf/CODA individuals, so I am (from what I understand) learning the correct grammar as I go along. It’s still very hard to grasp though- I feel like every time I get used to a “rule” there are 500 exceptions to the rule! This is how spoken English is too, so I understand it’s a universal thing.

My questions are: 1) Do Deaf people or people who primarily communicate via sign struggle to understand SEE/PSE often or does the point come across either way? Like if a non-English speaker said “where bathroom” instead of “where is the bathroom at” to me, I would definitely understand the question- I would know it’s incorrectly phrased but it’s not a big deal. Is that how SEE/PSE is for the most part?
2) Is word order pretty interchangeable like in spoken English?

Thank you!

Experiences with medications?

I was wondering if anyone has taken/heads of any medication that eased the symptoms of anorexia that isn’t Zyprexa/Olazipine.

I took prozac and I feel like it didn’t do much in terms of my ED, but I was also in a terrible place and didn’t want to get better. Additionally I was struggling really bad with depression and ocd so I guess that would’ve been a lot of things for 1 pill to tackle… I’ve been off of it for years so I don’t exactly remember my experience but it was somewhat positive I know that.

I’m in a place where I do want to get better now, but I’m just experiencing such extreme thoughts that I cannot. I’m not seeking advice per say, but I am seeking other peoples stories and experiences to know what to further research and discuss with my doctor.
