Grownup children of parents with schizophrenic disorder/paranoia here?

Hey everyone,

I know that relatively few patients with schizophrenic disorders do actually have kids and live with them, but maybe i am not the only one?

My (F 48) father (m 78, born 1943) suffered from late onset schizophrenic disorder, starting around his late 30ies, when my sibling and I were around 5 and 9.

Lots of trauma rised from not only my father's disease and behaviour, but also from the boomer generation's way of pretty much faking perfection for the neighbours and having little to no knowledge about mental diseases in general.

So If anyone can relate, i would be glad If you want to share your story.

AITA for expecting my sister to follow through on a birthday trip she promised my daughter?

AITA for expecting my sister to keep a promise to my daughter?

My sister promised, entirely on her own, to take my 9-year-old daughter on a 2–3 day hiking trip as a birthday present. My daughter was thrilled—she absolutely adores her aunt.

Finding a date was difficult because we live in different places and I work shifts. My sister also had other plans. I reminded her about the trip before we even managed to celebrate the birthday, because my daughter was really looking forward to it and it needed planning.

Eventually, after quite a bit of planning on my side, we found one weekend. By then, the promised 2–3 days had become one day of hiking. Still, I was happy my daughter would get to do something special with her aunt.

Then the weather forecast turned bad.

My sister suggested cancelling the hike and instead spending a nice weekend at our parents' house—which we already do regularly.

I told her I understood that bad weather might make hiking impossible, but that she would need to reschedule it. I also told her I was hurt that I had to keep reminding her about a trip that was her idea in the first place, and that it felt like my daughter and I were low on her list of priorities.

Her response was that she is making an effort because she could have gone to a festival that weekend but chose not to. She also said her upcoming van trip is a priority.

I snapped and said I'd just take my daughter camping near home with one of her friends instead.

My sister says I'm overreacting. She then offered to spend the weekend with my daughter at her current short-term partner instead, which will need lots of explaining to my daughter.

I love my sister, and my daughter absolutely adores her. I'm sure she loves us too. But this isn't the first time I've felt like I have to bend over backwards to make time together happen.

So, AITA for expecting my sister to either follow through with the hiking trip or properly reschedule it?

TL;DR: My sister promised my daughter a 2–3 day hiking trip for her birthday. After scheduling issues and lots of planning, it became one day and is now being cancelled because of bad weather. She suggested our usual family weekend instead. I'm hurt because I feel my daughter isn't a priority, especially since the trip was her idea. AITA for expecting her to follow through or reschedule?
