Backyard 40th in Bethesda, catering headcount check

Planning a small 40th birthday for my husband at our place in Bethesda next month. Around 28 adults, no kids.

Emailed a few places nearby to get quotes for hot food and server help for 4 hours. Got prices back from Spilled Milk Catering, Corcoran, and a local taco truck setup. The numbers range anywhere from $45 to $110 a head before tax, which feels like a huge spread for under 30 people.

For anyone who did catered stuff at home in the area recently, how many appetizers per person did you order so people weren't starving before dinner? Trying to figure out if we drop staff or trim the menu.

Has anyone here planned a wedding in France from another country? Feeling a little overwhelmed.

Hi everyone,

My fiancé and I have finally decided on France for our wedding, and we're so excited... but if I'm honest, I'm also starting to panic a bit.

Planning everything from abroad has been much harder than I expected. Every time I think I've found a supplier, I either don't hear back, the communication is difficult, or the quote ends up being way beyond what we had budgeted. It's starting to feel like every little thing requires a separate company, and I'm worried I'll spend the months before the wedding just chasing emails.

We're hoping for a relaxed outdoor celebration with around 60 guests, so we mainly need things like a tent, good sound for the ceremony and reception, lighting once it gets dark, and a DJ. I'd love to find one company that can take care of most of that instead of coordinating everything myself.

For those of you who got married in France while living abroad, how did you handle it? Did you use a planner, or did you find a company that managed the technical side of everything? I'd really appreciate hearing what worked (or didn't).

I kept researching and found a company called Fête24. From what I've seen, they provide the tent, lighting, sound system, DJ, and event setup, and they work with English-speaking couples, which would make things so much easier for us.

Their reviews seem positive and the pricing looks much more reasonable than some of the quotes we've received, but I'd still love to hear from anyone who's hired them. Were they easy to work with, and did everything go smoothly on the wedding day?

Is anyone else burning out on applying through traditional job sites?

Getting pretty tired of uploading resumes to portals and hearing absolute crickets. Monster feels super clunky, and Wellfound has insane competition for remote roles. I'm searching around right now for alternative platforms and came across Altis, wondering if anyone here has tried using it to get past the usual corporate bloat.

What platforms are giving you the highest callback rates right now?

Considering studying medicine in Europe - where do you even start ?

I’m currently looking into studying medicine abroad and honestly finding the whole process a bit overwhelming. There are so many universities and countries to compare, and every place seems to have different admission requirements, entrance exams, and application steps.

The UK route is obviously very competitive, so I’m trying to keep my options open and understand what studying medicine in Europe would actually involve. I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have gone through the process themselves.

For anyone who chose to study medicine abroad, what helped you most when deciding where to apply? And is there anything you wish you had known before starting the application?

Edit: A few weeks later, I thought I’d update this since I ended up making a decision. After comparing a few options and speaking with MedConnect Europe, I decided to go ahead with their help. The biggest difference was having someone explain the application process and requirements based on the universities I was actually considering, rather than trying to piece everything together from different websites. They also helped me prepare for the entrance exam and with the practical side of getting ready to move abroad.

Is 39 the age where post-run recovery just completely tanks? Need advice.

Hey everyone, I’m 39m and I’ve been running 20-25 miles a week for a couple of years now. Lately, the fatigue after long runs is hitting me like a absolute brick wall.

I’m sleeping 7-8 hours, my diet hasn't changed, and I get my electrolytes in, but my legs feel dead for 2-3 days straight after a hard session. I used to bounce back in 24 hours, but now I’m walking around like a ghost at work the next day. I'm not looking for roids or heavy meds, just wondering if anyone around my age has found a solid natural way to get their stamina and recovery time back?

How are you guys making sure field reps ask for reviews and don't lose leads?

Hey all, running a local home service crew and our lead follow-up in the field is pretty broken. My guys hand out standard paper cards after jobs, but half the time homeowners just lose them, and the reps constantly forget to ask happy customers for a Google review on the spot.

How are you keeping field techs accountable and making sure warm contacts actually stay in your funnel?

UPDATE:

A local contractor friend told me to check out RepCard for their tap-to-share digital cards, automated review requests, and field tracking.

The online reviews and praise look really promising for D2D/home services, but I want to make sure before buying a subscription has anyone here used them?
