dating scene at imperial??

I searched this sub for questions about dating but somehow i came up empty handed (should I be surprised??).

Do people even have time to date? Do yall date lse/ucl/kcl ppl too? How do people meet? Thru clubs or pubs? Or classes? Or apps?

What are small cultural differences between the us and the uk that actually matter a lot?

TIL you MUST say "please" in the uk when ordering food or else you're rude. In America, nobody really says please, they just say "hello could I get a ___" and as long as the tone is polite and not demanding it's not considered rude.

I'm an incoming American intl student going to college in London. I'm worried about small cultural differences like this that might ostracize me 😭 what other important small things like this should I (as an American) know that you can think of?

Did I accidentally tell a Spanish woman to shut up

I meant to say "no hablo espanol" but it came out as "no hablas... (then stumbled over my words)"

Does this mean "you no talk" or smth?

I have a cooking game show idea

Everyone gets one egg, salt, pepper, olive oil, and water. They can use any kitchen tool or cookware to prepare it in any way they want. They can make the eggs however they want. Whoever makes the most creative and delicious egg wins!

Artists from countries with weaker currencies should just sell commissions to American/european sellers

As long as they can communicate in English (not a problem with ai and Google Translate nowadays) they can make absolute bank in their home country.

An American might commission an art piece for $30 that would take an artist 1hr to draw, which would convert to ¥203/hr to a Chinese artist. The average hourly wage in Beijing is ¥27/hr. So if a Chinese artist did that they'd be pretty well off.

Likewise if an American got rednote/wechat and used Chinese I'm sure they could get super discount commissions from Chinese artists.

found a puppy while traveling what do I do

It's somewhat rural here, I'm staying at a guesthouse about an hour from the closest town (which has about half a mil in pop). This village has electricity and WiFi.

The guesthouse owners bought him today on a whim and don't really have a plan for him. He is barely 5 weeks old. I don't even know if they know what to feed a puppy.

They also have another adult dog tied to the corner of the yard. The old ladies who live at the guesthouse tell me that it bites and that's why they keep him tied up. It seems to have spent its whole life in that corner barking at anyone who dares come close enough.

I don't want the same fate for this lil baby here. The old ladies tell me not to touch him cuz he has germs or whatever and will piss and shit on me. I took him to the bathroom because otherwise they would've kept him in a cardboard box outside to fend for himself. I know puppies at this age don't sleep through the night and need to relieve themselves at night, but I can't really do that for him so I'm keeping him in the bathroom where it's easy to clean up any messes.

I'm here for two more weeks. I'm away for most of the day. I've been feeding him eggs, sweet potato, cooked rice, and various fruit (I know not to feed dog grapes or chocolate!). Nobody else here seems to like dogs very much other than a few other guests staying here. What can I do to help him? Rural china doesn't have many rules regarding animal safety. Heck he was taken at 5 weeks which is way too early for much of the world.

Super cheap basic hotels in Shanghai?

I'm looking for a super cheap place to sleep for a few nights, just me myself and I. Maybe something like a capsule hotel or hostel that's maybe around 200-300rmb? Does that exist? I'm literally just looking for a bed to sleep on at night. It would be nice if it's near the city center.

is it possible to get “rescinded”? aka you meet your offer conditions but they deny you a spot

I’m american so I do APs, not IB. Say I meet the offer conditions (an english literacy test and sufficient AP scores). But my high school also sends a final transcript with my school grades. When i applied, they asked for predicted grades which my counselor provided (after discussing with me ofc). My grades in one class in spring term are much below my predictions. Could imperial deny me entry if my actual grades are far below my predictions? Also, would they care if I got a D in US history? In an american school that would be a problem even for stem schools but I heard in the UK they don’t really care about classes unrelated to your major.

offer holder wondering about dorms/residence halls

I'm american so I don't know how different the housing situation is in the UK.

Are there suites? Are there kitchens in suites or in common rooms? Do people steal food from the fridges? Are we allowed microwaves, heat plates, mini fridges? Is there AC? What about noise/city traffic? Is laundry free? What's the difference between prenium and standard rooms? (is it just the bed size?) Is a twin room the same thing as an american double aka having one roommate?

Which of the residence halls is good to live in and close to campus? (i'm doing engineering so south kensington) How's dorm culture like? Do people hang out in common rooms together? Are you allowed to invite guests over?

Woodward and kemp seem super nice but having it be a 50 minute bike ride away is kinda scary. Southside and eastside are close to campus which is nice but im concerned about people stealing food from communal refrigerators and leaving dirty dishes in the sink bc at my boarding high school it was a big problem.

can i switch from civil to another type of engineering

i'm an offer holder for fall 26 entry. i'm american if that's relevat

I applied to 3 different imperial engineering courses but was only accepted to civil, my least favorite. I want to switch into design engineering. how difficult would that be? i know civil eng has the highest acceptance rate out of the engineering courses, so would they would be less inclined to accepted switches out of civil? i heard switching within departments is easier than moving departments. is there a possibility for me?

sorry guys but i gotta ask cuz im scared.

i applied with a 3.7gpa, but with a downward trend from 3.9 -> 3.6 from 9th to 12th grade. but senior spring might be reallllly bad. i decided to pile all the hard courses to senior spring when “grades dont matter” but welp i may have gone too far. plus im kinda burnt out and have caught a huge case of senioritis lol. it kinda is just my own fault.

majoring in engineering.

5 classes:
- math (A/A-)
- cs (A/A-)
- physics, a subfield not relevant to engineering (B-/C+)
- english (B-/C+)
- history (C)

am i cooked? i unfortuantely kinda dont have the motivation to lock in unless my college threatens recision.
