Women’s Clothing
Salaam all. I wanted to share something I’ve been struggling with recently and hopefully get some insights. I am 33 years old. I’ve always dressed in long skirts and pants and dresses and at least short sleeves. Recently I’ve become really down about how as Muslim women we are so often overheated in the summer months and while playing sports.
I’m considering more and more taking a more liberal approach to my clothing and wearing things that I don’t consider to be sexual, but things that are just more practical for the heat, like sleeveless tops and mid thigh shorts. I’m honestly just sick of missing out on so many things that I don’t consider bad or harmful because I have to cover up so much.
I believe in the Quranic principle that one should dress modestly for the culture that they are in. I also believe that a lot of the traditional clothing expectations were influenced by the culture of that time period. And lastly, I definitely believe that there is a difference between dressing sexually versus dressing in a way that shows more skin, but is not sexual and is just more practical.
I’m sorry if this offends anyone at all, but I’m just wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences.
Edit: I now have a number of random men DMing me on Reddit to “chat” and “interact.” It just goes to show how disgusting and annoying the patriarchy is within our religious community. Men take a post by a woman wanting to dress practically and not swelter in the heat and make it about them and use it as an opportunity to get interaction from a woman because they see her as free and open to them now. If you are a man, do not DM me. I made this post looking for public insights.
