Gan Guo (Dry Pot)…something that you might not find outside of China

What’s special about Gan Guo is not that it’s spicy but it’s very versatile. You can mix it with different proteins, different greens and veggies. Of course the essence got to be the Hunan spice (or Hunan heat)!

A Shanghainese feast from Jiading

How many dishes do you recognize? Not all of them are the most typical Ben-Bang-Cai (本帮菜) yet they are all local dishes that are enjoyed by local Chinese!

Allow me to say a few more words about the background of this - we are trying to match make travelers with local homes in China so they get a taste of the local authentic food (plus meeting local). On this occasion, we are joined by a food writer from World of Chinese, and he wrote an excellent piece on how you don’t find Ben-Bang-Cai (本帮菜) easily in heart of the megacity but in everyday local’s home.

The first airport lounge that I see massage chair

It’s in Hongqiao International Airport Terminal 1. It’s the China Eastern lounge I believe. And the massage chairs are free to use!

Eat fresh according to the 24 Solar Terms - Small Full Grain

As an agricultural society for thousands of years, 24 solar terms not only guide how farmers operate, but how families eat as well in China. As we enter Xiaoman (Small Full Grain), certain ingredients become the center of attention - like Loquat (pipa). The flower blossom in autumn, bears fruit in winter, and start to ripe in late spring. Now is the season where Loquat has the sweetest and juiciest taste.

Who’s in for this lunch?

Green pea sprouts with shredded fried potato in sweet sour sauce

Continuing our series on tasty Chinese dishes that foreigners might not know…today we introduce Qian Ban Dou Miao (巧拌豆苗). In the northern China, there are less leafy greens (because of the climate), so Dou Miao (or Pea Sprouts) becomes one of the rare, decent greens for the cuisine there.

With shredded potato and the sauce, it can be a refreshing appetizer!

Found this cute creature next to Suzhou Creek

It’s a place called Shenyuli (慎余里), apparently an old alley in Shanghai converted into modern high end restaurant and shopping area

Hi travelers! A few months ago we started an initiative to match make travelers with local hosts in Shanghai. You can go to a local’s home and enjoy a home-cooked meal. We have got good feedback so far as these created opportunities and connections that otrhweise wouldn’t happen!
