Any New Cafés or Businesses Opening That Need a Mural Artist? (Barrie/GTA)

Hi everyone! I’m an artist based in Barrie and I’ve recently become really interested in doing mural work for cafés, small businesses, studios, or new spaces opening up around Barrie or even the GTA.

I was wondering if anyone knows of:
- new cafés/businesses opening soon
- places looking for mural artists
- local businesses that support emerging artists
- events or communities where artists usually find opportunities like this

I mainly do hand-painted artwork and Arabic calligraphy pieces, but I’d love to expand into murals and larger-scale work.

Also, for artists who already do this kind of work — how did you get your first mural opportunity? Did you just reach out to businesses directly?

Any advice, connections, or recommendations would really help. Thanks so much 🎨

Selling paintings at Sunnidale Park without a permit?

Has anyone in Barrie ever sold art/paintings at parks like Sunnidale without getting a vendor permit or license?

I’m talking something really small and lowkey, like setting a few paintings on a park bench or near a picnic area for a couple hours — not a huge setup or tent.

Would this actually get you stopped/fined, or do people generally leave you alone? Are bylaw officers/police usually on the lookout for this stuff? Just wondering how strict Barrie is about it.

How Much Should I Charge for These Handmade Arabic Calligraphy Canvases? (New to Commissions)

Hi everyone,

I’m new to doing art commissions and was hoping to get some honest pricing advice. I made these 3 Arabic calligraphy canvases (3 Quls) and I’m trying to figure out what would be a fair price for all three together.

Most of the materials were from Dollarama, but each canvas probably took around 2–2.5 hours to complete. I’m still pretty new to this, so I’m not sure how much people usually charge for handmade pieces like this.

What would you estimate the total price for all 3 should be? Any advice on pricing commissions would really help!

Looking for a Place to Stay in Westdale This Summer (8 Weeks)

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a place to stay in the Westdale/Hamilton area for about 8 weeks this summer. Girls-only place preferred.

I’ll need parking for my car as well, and I’m hoping to find something affordable in the $200–300 range since it’s only short term.

If anyone has a room available or knows of anything, please message me. Thanks!

Is this a good sketch of eyes?

Is this a good sketch of eyes? Honest opinions please 😭

I’ve been practicing realism/shading and wanted some genuine feedback on what looks good and what I should improve.

Considering a PhD after my MSc, looking for advice

Hi everyone,

I recently completed my MSc at McMaster (previously did my BSc in Life Sciences at McMaster and a Graduate Certificate in Digital Health at Mohawk), and I’m now starting to look into the possibility of pursuing a PhD.

I’m still trying to understand how the process works and would really appreciate any guidance from people who have gone through it, especially in health/digital health fields.

A few questions I have:
- Do you need to contact/find a supervisor before applying?
- How competitive are PhD applications generally?
- Do you need a fully defined research topic before starting?
- How does funding usually work?
- What is the typical length of a PhD, and what’s the shortest completion time you’ve seen?
- Any general advice on choosing supervisors/programs or deciding if a PhD is the right path?

Any advice, experiences, or resources would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Looking for places to sell my artwork in the GTA/Toronto area

Hey everyone!

I’m looking to start selling my artwork more seriously and wanted to ask for some advice/recommendations from other artists or anyone familiar with the art scene in Toronto/GTA. I do custom commissions as well as original paintings that are already completed.

Does anyone know of any good pop-ups, art markets, vendor events, cafés, small businesses, or stalls that are good for emerging artists? Even Instagram pages/accounts that post vendor calls would be super helpful.

This is my art Instagram for reference: [@areeshaspalette]

I’d really appreciate any suggestions, experiences, or tips — thank you!!
