Dealing with upstairs neighbor's super-loud TV at 3 a.m.

I rented the ground-level apartment in my friend’s split level for a few years. The guys who rented upstairs owned a party lighting company, and as a result they usually came home from work around 3 AM. I worked a nine-to-five job, and I’m a fairly light sleeper. When they came home from work, they’d occasionally turn on the TV, and usually fairly loud, which would of course wake me up, but most of the time I could drown out the noise by turning on a fan in my bedroom.

This was annoying but I could deal with it……until one of their girlfriends moved in with them upstairs. This nasty such-and-such had no problem with turning up the volume on the TV all the way, in the middle of the night every night, and watching for hours. This was the early years of flat-screen TVs and they had a big one, so likely it was verrrry expensive. When I knocked on the door to ask them to turn it down, I was told "this is when we get home from work and we’ll do what we want". Even having my friend, their landlord, intervene, had no effect.

Well, a few nights of one or two hours’ sleep turned me downright ingenious. I remembered that once, while microwaving my dinner, I had started vacuuming the floor and having both appliances turned on tripped the circuit breaker. I crossed my fingers that we were on the same circuit and during the next morning’s 3 AM showing of Willy Wonka, with the girlfriend screaming “I love this movie!” and turning the volume up even louder than usual, I turned on the microwave and the vacuum. Five seconds and poof! Blessed silence! I heard a little shuffling around upstairs, then one of them went down into the basement and reset the circuit breaker.

The power came back on, and so did the television. I waited about a minute before turning back on the microwave and vacuum. Poof! Silence! They reset the circuit breaker again, but this time there was no more TV. I went back to the most blissful slumber ever.

My friend later told me that they complained to him about the power going out because it was such an expensive TV and that could damage the electronics. I told him that if they kept the volume to a respectful level then I wouldn’t have to do anything about it, but I wouldn’t hesitate to if it happened again. The microwave/vacuum trick was only necessary a couple more times before they got the hint and kept the noise down in the middle of the night.

I let someone into a toll booth line in front of me to piss off the driver behind me

I was heading home to Long Island NY from a trip to Maryland. Now, the amount of traffic to/from/through the NYC area is dreadful at best, and when you add the temperament of all the typically inconsiderate LI/NY drivers into the mix, it’s something best avoided, if possible. I try to drive like a decent person: I let people in front of me, I always signal, basically I’m in no rush so I don’t let the traffic get to me.

I’m approaching a toll bridge and the lanes to the booths are jam-packed and barely moving on this hot summer day. A glance into my rear view mirror shows me that there’s a young lady trying to merge into the lane behind me, but the nasty battleaxe in the car right behind mine is purposely leaving only inches between her car and mine, refusing to let her in. The young lady, very likely a newer driver, is growing upset as we’re nearing the toll booths since she can’t enter the lane.

I really can’t stand people who refuse to cut a driver some slack on the road, and the smug look on the battleaxe’s face is irking me. I brake my car, lean over into the passenger side, roll down the window and wave the girl in ahead of me. The new expression of anger on Madame Battleaxe’s face in my rear view mirror was priceless.

That was revenge enough, but the icing on the cake? When I pulled up to the booth, the young lady had already paid for my toll!

I pried up the floor over my father's bedroom and stole $100

Backstory: my parents were in the middle of putting a second floor on our house when they divorced, and it was habitable but unfinished. The two rooms in the back were just 2x4's for walls and plywood floors.

So it was 1980, I was 14 years old, my brother was 12, it was the summer and we never had any money or anything to do. One of those unfinished rooms on the second floor was directly above my father's bedroom, which he always kept locked. It was dinnertime on a Friday and he was out back barbecuing. My brother and I had figured out a few days earlier that we could pry up the edge of the plywood floor, move a drop ceiling tile out of the way, and I could lower him down by hand to pilfer Playboy magazines or quarters or whatever, then hoist him back up and put everything back the way it should be.

This particular Friday was a payday, and brother noticed my father's wallet was sitting on the bed. I asked "what's in it?" and he answered "hundred dollar bills." "Take one!" I said, which he did, and I hoisted him up and we closed everything back up.

I got blamed for it of course, because I was the bad kid in the family, but he couldn't prove it and he never got his hundred dollars back.

2016 Rogue USB stick for music library

I'm using a USB memory stick for music in my 2016 Rogue (non-BOSE system). Formatted to FAT32 and dragged and dropped all the folders with band names onto the stick. The folders are named ACDC, Aerosmith, B-52's, etc. The MP3 files in each folder have an anagram of the album name, then a two digit number, then the name of the song, so I can see what song I'm browsing to on the fairly short line on the screen. They're in the order that I dragged them onto the stick, which was alphabetical. Now, the problem, when I add a new band folder, it's automatically displayed at the very end of the list of folders. So if I've added Alanis Morissette for example, I have to scroll down to the end of the list past Veruca Salt, Weezer, Yes, Zebra, and then finally I find Alanis Morissette.

Is there some way, short of remaking the entire memory stick each time I want to add a band, to re-order the complete list of folders to display in alphabetical order?
