I used to listen to hip-hop, shoegaze, classical music, jazz, r&b, the works. The thing is I listened to a few bands like Black Sabbath, Slayer etc. for a long time, but most mainstream metal didn't really click with me. I got to black metal via blackgaze, and from there I started getting into the other subgenres like doom, death, thrash, gothic etc. But I never got to properly listen to proto metal or the the early stuff other than Sabbath, so bands like Judas Priest and Rainbow just passed by me. Anyone else heavily into extreme metal but with no interest for classic heavy metal, or anyone who ignored the early roots of metal?

When I was getting into Bathory, there was no Octagon on Spotify so I had to listen to it on YouTube. Today, when I thought to relisten to their discography and scrolled through their albums, I saw Octagon, and I'm so happy that the full studio discography is now available on Spotify!

Hey guys! I have been getting into some more female fronted black metal and it's a breath of fresh air, love me some diversity for vocals once in a while. And I realized that I have yet to listen to melodic bm made by girls, and it's one of my favorite bm subgenres. Any recs? It can be a solo project, or a full band, only thing needed is to have female vocals and to fit the genre. And no, I don't mean kinda melodic riffs, like Urgehal, I mean Sacramentum and Vinterland level stuff. Google recommends bullshit, so let me know your picks 🫶

Edit : MELODIC black metal exclusively, I already listen to a fair share of basic and raw female fronted black metal.

What the title says. What are your favorite songs by a band with goat in the name? I think this is mine, but it's hard to choose since the whole album is great. May the OUGH be with you.

I knew some punk bands since I was a kid, and always asociated it more with rock and goth music more than metal. But in recent years my appreciation for metal music grew, and I started getting into different genres, and lately black speed/thrash metal has been a daily necesity of mine. But one thing I came to see was that many of my favorite black speed bands were claimed to have great punk influence. I'm talking bands like Venom, Bulldozer, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, Gospel Of The Horns, Sabbat, Abigail, etc. And they all seemed to praise bands like Discharge. Recently I was recommended to try some crust, and Detestation was my first band. And they are awesome. The vocalist especially is relentless. Any bands like them? They reminded me a lot of one of my favorite bands, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. I am an absolute begginer, so even more mainstream bands will do it.

I saw their album The Grand Magnificence and got into it thinking it was an atmospheric black metal album. But boy was I mistaken. Some great melodic death metal, with some filthy riffs. Unreal Romanticism part 1 is stuck in my head. It reminded me a bit of Intestine Baalism. Can't wait to properly finish their discography.

I have been on a meloblack and funeral doom kick lately, I also welcome these 🖤.

I recently found this small band called Necro Schizma and holy shit. They play the filthiest black/doom ever. I've never heard anything related to black metal played so crushingly slow. Unfortunately they only released a demo in 89' and dipped, but it's really worth checking out. They are like a love child of Electric Wizard and Hellhammer and sound incredible. And they have only like 30 monthly listeners.

Lately almost all I listen to is early extreme metal, I just love the genre blending and raw sounds. Seeing people fight over what genre a band is just feels so right for everything. Like, they really deserve all the credit, and I highly value influence.

But there are also bands that were very important in the underground in the 80s, but got lost across the wheel of time.

For exemple, the bands like Mefisto and Samhain are one of a kind to me, and I wished they released more. But the only cure for this feeling is really just finding other bands.

So what are your choises? I am not pretentious about controversy or monthly listeners or stuff like that. Just some good bands with releases before the profound defining of the genres, like proto black, proto death, or doom.

I am very familiar with the 1st wave black metal scene and listened to lots of bands/albums, but they just don't have that something that the early works of Tom G Warrior have. I tried listening to bands that got inspired by them, but most fall short with the vocals for me, for example Obituary has some good influence from them but I don't enjoy the vocals.

Does anyone have any good alternatives to Hellhammer? Or Celtic Frost up to Into the Pandemonium? I'm really into raw production with filthy drumming , speed metal influences and a vicious vocalist. Tom probably can't be topped, but still I am willing to try new projects, so name as many as you can!
