Lanois on No Line on the Horizon

He was on the Rolling Stone All Access podcast, and here’s what he had to say about the making of No Line:

“We already had a great record before we went to Morocco. At a lunch table in the south of France I suggested to the band that we finish up the ten that I recommended, and of course we went to Morocco and didn’t work on any of that and came up with whole batch of new material which makes for more fun because we keep hoping the great track is yet to come, and so who could say anything bad about that?

“Morocco, everybody got sick, most people got sick so it became this very, very long process of record making, and when I got back to - I think we ended up back in Dublin - I was pretty worn out. That’s probably when you spoke to Eno (laughs). (At the time, Eno gave an interview and expressed some frustration)

“I don’t know what to say about it other than in the end we got what we got, but there was a great record before we went to Morocco. I was very excited about it at the time, but the adventure kept rolling along.“

This was interesting, but it wasn’t persuasive. It actually made her look foolish.

She relied heavily on a study that nobody would publish and wasn’t peer reviewed, and then she claimed that there’s actually a *shortage* of dogs because people can’t always get the specific breed they want. That’s like saying there’s a beer shortage because I can’t get my favourite English microbrew in Canada.
