Colleges use students’ papers and patents to improve their rankings. Better rankings bring more students and more money. Faculty also benefit from these publications through promotions and career growth, while students mostly get their name on the paper and sometimes a small incentive. It starts to feel like a big MLM system where students do most of the work while everyone above them benefits.
Next year, if placements are not enough to attract students, rankings will become even more important. Even placement numbers can be misleading when internships and off campus jobs are shown in a way that makes them look like on campus placements. Students deserve clear and honest numbers.
It starts feeling like we are paying to become the workforce to improve institution.
And telling students not to speak negatively about the college is not the answer. This is a democratic country, have freedom of speech not a place where students are expected to stay silent or act like slaves to an institution.
Students have every right to question, criticise and share their experiences.
