Magnificent makoyana

If you were to ask me what my favorite house plant is in the 40+ years I’ve been growing plants, I would have to say Calathea makoyana. Yes technically it’s a Goeppertia but I resist change. 🤓 Makoyana just dazzles! It’s so pretty it looks fake. So without further ado I present my makoyana!

Fibonacci Maranta

I was checking all my plants this evening and noticed the spiral formed by this Maranta leuconeura leaf that’s just opening. I am always drawn to the spirals that naturally occur in nature. The bright background is a ‘Lemon Lime’ pothos cutting.

Canned Peas

I saw this online this winter and knew I had to jump on the sweet peas trend. The difference is mine are planted in 9 ounce clear plastic cups. I heated up the end of a wire to melt drainage holes in the bottom of each cup. Then I placed cuttings of my Senecio rowleyanus to root in a fast draining soil mix. A few months on a sunny windowsill and voila!

When it’s time to water the cups are removed from the cans, I water until they drain out, then they go back into their cans.

I had a visit at my doctor’s office today. I noticed a holiday cactus in the waiting room. What caught my attention were the dark margins on the leaves. The receptionist said she thought it has peach colored flowers. Time will tell!
