rescue help!

Grabbed from a friend while I was helping her move to see if I can save. I was going to propagate but I just learned that calatheas have to be propped by root division? At this state, would it even be possible to save, or try to propagate the few remaining good leaves? I'm very new to this level of plant care and knowledge so I'm looking for any help or advice!

What am I doing wrong?

Hey everybody, I am an accidental first owner of a Calathea and he's struggling a little. I have a couple of leaves that are yellowing that 100% are going to dry out because I have already seen this happen 3-4 times in the last few weeks :(

When I got it almost two months ago I didn't know it had very specific needs. I am now running a humidifier right next to it and I've been giving him exclusively distilled water for a week. I also sprayed neem oil as I've noticed there were a few spider mites (can't see them right now).

I think the biggest mistake was a month ago when I repotted it, I used universal potting soil but now I know it needs something more airy, but I'm scared of changing the soil again because the first time I did that it stressed him, gah.

There are no abrupt temperature changes and only receives indirect light. The good thing is that the leaves in the middle are okay, they change position normally from day to night and I have a couple of new growths.

One last detail, where I got this plant from it was already stressed and it has crispy borders and it was discolored.

Please, what can I do? Thank you

Calathea Makoyana repotting question

I have had to repot my calathea makoyana yesterday night, as having come back home after 3 weeks away and a heatwave, the soil was barely dragging any water. I have had it for over a year and it's a mature calathea at about 70cm tall. It did not need any more room in the pot, so I repotted it in the same size pot but with a different soil disturbing nothing from the root system. In doing so, I've only added soil at the bottom and at the top, as there was no room around the root system. Is this wrong? Should I repot it in a larger pot in spite of not needing it? My logic at the time was root system + old soil + new soil in new pot should be allowing water to work its way around it

Looks like she's finally happy

My plant is blooming ! I am so happy, I didn't expect this to happen !

When I got this plant she was allready quite large but she was not in good health. Despite good care she often have leaves that I need to cut of because they turn brown. I don't know why but I will try to filter the water to see if it's better for her.

Last week I changed her location to a more humid place but I was concered whether she would have enough light. Is blooming a sign she's thriving here ?

Anyway I am so happy, I can't wait to see the flowers !

Calathea Rescue (from myself)

For a while, I gave up on my calathea ornata, after getting spider mites and dropping a ton of leaves. She was so bald, and stretching because my indoor set up wasn’t good. Now, she’s thriving!!! I pretty much leave it alone, on my balcony, which gets bright shade all day. I live in north tx so it’s always a bit humid here, at least 50% on most days. She’s pushed at least 25 leaves in the last 2 months after not getting SQUAT for the last 8 months! I water using only distilled water and I use the grow queen fertilizer maybe once a month.

Is there any saving this medallion?

I've had this plant for over a year, but since I moved to a new place in March, it's taken a downward turn. I live in a very dry climate, and although we had a lot of rain in June, the humidity in my apartment is definitely too low for this species. It's been yellowing and shrivelling recently; I cut off several dead leaves so you can see better.

Is there anything I can do for this plant, or is it a lost cause? How can I give it the best chance at bouncing back?

Maranta lemon lime leaves yellow. What's going on?

I have a maranta lemon lime for a year now and her leaves are starting to get yellow when they mature. This didn't happen before. I repotted her half a year ago and her roots look healthy to me, she also keeps growing new leaves, it's just that they yellow after a while.

She's under a sansi grow light and she also gets some light from a north facing window.

Any idea what's going on?

My Calathea journey

After posting about my success with that little piece of root I had left of a very sad, root rotted plant a little while ago (https://www.reddit.com/r/calatheas/s/gnHtGQ7vgN) I thought I'd share my other plants with you as well and maybe ask for some guidance along the way.

For a little bit of context, I've never been a plant guy. Had the odd one here and there but it's only very recently that I discovered the joy of house plants, so by and large I am a complete novice.

So, I actually had 2 calatheas but I hadn't realised that that's what they were. One was surviving, I guess, but not thriving.

Retrospectively it was too much direct light and the leaves got crispy and burnt. That's the one with the pink leaves in the pic (is that a rocea?).

The other one is actually doing very well as she lives in my bathroom, not too much light and of course it's nice and humid there. When I bought her she was flowering bright yellow/orange but the flowers have faded since.

Since I have learnt more about these plants, mainly by reading through this sub, I have trimmed off the crispy leaves of the pink one and placed her somewhere more suitable. Well, she's doing fantastic now! Lots of new leaves have and still are growing and she's even flowering!

Mega chuffed with how both of them are doing and I am most certainly going to add more to my collection.

I do have a few of questions, though:

  1. As you can see in the pics, I still have the stems where I cut off the dead/crispy leaves in the pink one. Can I expect more growth from them or should I cut them back further?

  2. How do I encourage a bushier growth like the other one has?

  3. The formerly bright flowers of the other one have gone very dull. Is that normal? Have they just completed their flowering cycle? Should I cut them off and wait for new ones to grow?

Lastly, help me name those two! As I said in the last post, I named the one that's just starting from scratch again Lazara as a female version of Lazarus for obvious reasons.

Give me some ideas for the other two!

Once again, your help, knowledge and insights are very much appreciated!

Calathea Help

Hi everyone, I received this gorgeous calathea as a gift in January and it was very full and thriving. Recently the older leaves turn yellow and fade color. The plant has been inside near the window since I received it and I only water when the soil is no longer moist. I recently downsized the pot thinking maybe there’s too much soil but still have yellowing leaves along with new leaves coming in.

Looking for any advice or tips on what could be going on or what to do?

Magnificent makoyana

If you were to ask me what my favorite house plant is in the 40+ years I’ve been growing plants, I would have to say Calathea makoyana. Yes technically it’s a Goeppertia but I resist change. 🤓 Makoyana just dazzles! It’s so pretty it looks fake. So without further ado I present my makoyana!

Flower?

Is my maranta about to flower? I’ve had her 5 years and this would be the first! So excited!

Can anyone identify what this sprout is??

I have what I think is a rose painted calathea, and it gets new leaves every so often, but I have never seen this.

Also how do it prevent the leaves from browning at the very edges? I mist it, and water it 2x a week lightly, even when I do more it seems to not like it.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Calathea bloom

I think it’s a calathea warscewiczii. It’s velvety. It thriving with lots of sun and not the greatest humidity (much to my surprise)

Calatheas set up for thriving conditions

Just bought two beautiful calatheas. I have two cats and wanted something pet friendly. After purchase, I didn’t realize how challenging it could be maintaining calatheas. My calathea ornata is thriving. However my rosepicta started having some crispy edges and 3 leaves turning yellow. I switched over from filtered water to DI water, and moved them from the bathroom to my bedroom. I also added a humidifier. Wondering how long the humidifier should run on for? And how often I should be misting?
