Just a Friendly Reminder
Stop trying to overdo and overthink Calathea care!
They are NOT difficult.
They prefer consistency- that’s all.
If you find a spot that’s working, and you noticed that your plant is thriving, don’t move it!
Stop drowning them in water every few days! Invest in a moisture meter, they are no more than $15. If you want to be cheaper than that, get a pack of wooden chopsticks from your local chop suey. Don’t check everyday, check every 3-4 days.
Oh, and kust because it’s pretty or free, doesn’t mean it needs to go home with you!
There are many more hardy, adaptable plants that are more beginner friendly…like pothos and peperomia.
I implore and encourage you to scroll through this sub and read previous post about Calathea care. Some of you guys are just doing way too much.
What am I doing wrong?
So this plant has been through it a bit recently. It was originally my grandmas, but she has some health issues that caused her to be away from home and my mom took her new plants and potted them all in one pot. I rescued them and separated them. This plant means a lot to me because I bought it with my grandma.
I gave this calathea a soil mix of chunky perlite and peat moss(I’m new to plants and panic bought but I’ve done more research and know why this is terrible for the environment now)
My mom had it tightly packed into really moist miraclegro for about a week but it looked like it was on the mend here. It lost a leaf after its second repotting but it had a new shoot. I’ve had it for two week and I was really worried about when to water it but the soil I planted it in was showing all the signs of being dry as hell by 5/9. So I gave it distilled water.
Within a couple days the left leaf started yellowing but the shoot in the middle which was healthy is now crispy and the lower left leaf which was healthy is also curled and crispy.
The soil looks dry again, but I have no idea what to do. The yellowing from what I’ve read means to much water and the curling means not enough water. When I replanted the roots looked fine they weren’t mushy or brown so I don’t think it’s root rot.
Do I water it today? Can I do something to help it or do I just have to wait and see?
Other factors
-It’s in an east window, but theres an alley with a taller building so maybe not enough light? I have east and south windows. My other aroid plants from this batch seem to like the south window, but I heard the calathea was more particular so I moved it.
-My locations regularly humidity is above 50 generally(today it’s 68) so I haven’t been doing anything special for that.
- The temp in my apartment is general 68-74 degrees but it is by a window that gets opened sometimes so it could be a degree or two colder or warmer.
My plant corner
My plant corner, i sometimes water the Calatheas with piss water, they seem to like being bunched up together, i mostly use aquarium water and have good window.
Am I doing this right?
I gave up on her a few months ago when she lost most of her leaves and fully expected her to die. I think she’s hanging on out of spite.
Trive
No new for now
Buth she had 4 new all open now💖
Need Advice - Pinstripe Calathea
I’m newer to plant keeping and I mostly keep Calathea’s since they are cat safe! I’ve had this pinstripe Calathea for about 10 months. I did have a baby 8 months ago and when I was in the newborn trenches all my plants fell by the wayside.
This pinstripe has grown what I assume is “leggy” and hasn’t sprouted any new leaves in a while. It’s definitely much bigger than when I first got it but it hasn’t gone as well as some other Calathea’s I have.
How can I help it thrive and grow more bushy?
Giant Calathea Orbifolia needs reporting?
This is Stefano, I got him about 3 years ago. For quite a while now he hasn't been growing any new leaves and his current ones have been drooping a lot (and developed brown spots). I never repotted him and I wonder if that's part of the issue, but I also know he's a bit old now and it might just be a sign of aging.
I water him thoroughly and drain excess water once a week, though back when I first got him I used to not drain the excess at all, which mightve caused a bit of root rot. Also, as you can see he sits right next to an air vent and south facing window, which he used to handle very well but I've heard calatheas don't like that.
Over the past few months I've also been feeding him an "all purpose" plant feed, but thus far there hasn't been any sign of improvement.
Any chance somebody could help my boy Stefano out and let me know if there's anything I could do to improve his quality of life? I am slightly worried about repotting him since I've heard calatheas can be dramatic about it, so I'm mostly writing to confirm whether it's necessary or if there's anything else I can do.
Calathea Issues
Hi everyone!
Could you please help me figure out what is wrong with my Calathea and how to cure it?
What's happening to my Calathea Lancifolia?
It was happily thriving until I repotted it in a bigger pot. A week or two after that, this started happening.
Is she just throwing a fit?
I ordered her online and just got her yesterday. I'm new to calatheas, got her to be next to my dottie that I got a month ago and is doing well. She was perky and folded up all day yesterday and when I left for work this morning. Came home to her like this. I have humidity tray underneath and will be ordering a humidifier shortly. I live in the northeast and it was in the 70s today, my thermostat saying my apartment was 76 when I got home.
Is she just throwing a temper tantrum and is just adjusting to my place and she'll be fine in a few days as she acclimates? I find it so hard to believe I killed her in 24 hours.
Is this a Goeppertia loeseneri?
Just got her. She was grouped with the Pink Auroras, but she obviously isn't the right color, the leaves are not as round and they feel slightly thinner/more papery than those of a Pink Aurora. The leaf structure seems to match a regular loeseneri, but the light stripe in the middle is missing. Is this a reverted/variegated/otherwise mutated loeseneri/Pink Aurora or something else entirely?
My Calathea is getting shoots 🥺
I I propagated this Calathea from a leaf node of another plant, so it started out with just two leaves.
My other Calathea isn't in the best shape, but this one really makes me proud. It seems to be thriving in the high humidity climate of the bathroom and is currently sprouting four new shoots that are coming up through the soil. She recently got three new leaves, too. Just wanted to share.
Stumbled upon a Silver Plate/Pink Aurora while traveling through MI
Of course I nabbed one and only spilled it once in the car driving home for hours and hours.
So now what ...
I'll start by saying that I can't keep a cactus alive to save my life so hope that makes anyone struggling feel a bit better... But I've got these ladies(I know the ones not a Calathea but similar).. and they won't quit. I literally water them when I remember they exist, fertilize all the time... They have slow release mixed in their soil and I water with miracle Gro or liquid fish rot ... I water them with water from my creek, from my well, sometimes the water I drain off other plants . The smaller is still in the glass pot with no drain holes it came in and the larger one I have in a hanging planter.. . But do these guys like to vine?... To hang...? What about separating the multiple plants into singles? Do or don't?
Adopted 2 this weekend
Rescued from big box stores.
Hope to give them a good home !!
New to the Calathea group.!!
I’m a new plant parent. Was told by the lady I bought this from that it was “low maintenance“
I went out of town and soil was fine on Wednesday. I usually check again on Sundays but I told my boyfriend he shouldn’t have to come by because the soil was fine on Wednesday before I left. 1st pic was Tuesday when I got home- a day later than expected, but still! 2nd pic is now. I gave her a little bit of fresh soil cut off one crunchy leaf and watered her. Probably didn’t even need the new soil 😅
