Lab Coats and Lab Workbooks?

A course I'm taking this trimester requires you to have a lab workbook and lab coat, and while it says it should be available at the university book store, but I can't see either of them on the online store.

It's about a week and a half until I need to have them, and I should have been more onto it, I'm aware of that, but even though it's not available online, will I be able to buy them in person? And if not, what can you do in that situation, is there somewhere else you have get them?

Do you have a daughter named Olivia, Evelyn, Ruby, Violet, or Lucy? These are the most common suggestions for their sister’s name!

I chose five relatively popular names for girls, Olivia, Evelyn, Ruby, Violet, and Lucy, and then looked through posts which asked for suggestions for names for a sister to them. I excluded posts that had other existing siblings, as it can change the suggestions too much. I recorded the suggestions for each name, and then looked to find the five most popular suggestions.

And these were the results!

Olivia

  1. Olivia and Amelia
  2. Olivia and Violet
  3. Olivia and Hazel
  4. Olivia and Lily
  5. Olivia and Sophia

Evelyn

  1. Evelyn and Audrey
  2. Evelyn and Lydia
  3. Evelyn and Josephine
  4. Evelyn and Charlotte
  5. Evelyn and Amelia

Ruby

  1. Ruby and Opal
  2. Ruby and Pearl
  3. Ruby and Jade
  4. Ruby and Iris
  5. Ruby and Gemma

Violet

  1. Violet and Hazel
  2. Violet and Daphne
  3. Violet and Evelyn
  4. Violet and Iris
  5. Violet and Alice

Lucy

  1. Lucy and Alice
  2. Lucy and Clara
  3. Lucy and Nora
  4. Lucy and Emma
  5. Lucy and Violet

I thought it was interesting to see what this subreddit generally perceives the style of each name to be. I'm definitely open to doing this with more names, so if anyone has any suggestions for names then feel free to comment them! Do note though that they have to be common enough, either in general or on this subreddit, to have enough posts be made about them.

The names of children I have heard out and about in Wellington, New Zealand

This list has been about a year and a half in the making. As we know, different countries have different naming styles and trends, and I thought it would be interesting to see a sample of the names of children in New Zealand!

These are the names of children, between the ages of 0 to about 12, that I either know or have heard in public. Specifically, I am from Wellington, the capital of New Zealand and the third biggest city, with a population of around 200,000 people.

Here is the list. Some of the spellings were guesses based off pronounciation, as well as the popularity of the different spelling variations.

If r/namenerds was a country, this is what the top 50 would look like for boys

This is a continuation of the list that I made last time. These are the fifty most frequently suggested names for boys on this subreddit, collected from comments made on posts that were over the last few months.

I also include the SSA rankings of the names from 2025, since I know a lot of people who post and comment are American, and the SSA lists are often referenced.

  1. Felix (Ranked 175)
  2. Julian (Ranked 25)
  3. Callum (Ranked 118)
  4. Arthur (Ranked 87)
  5. Dean (Ranked 125)
  6. Jasper (Ranked 129)
  7. Milo (Ranked 119)
  8. Jude (Ranked 155)
  9. Jonah (Ranked 128)
  10. Emmett (Ranked 121)
  11. Reid (Ranked 293)
  12. Sebastian (Ranked 16)
  13. Rowan (Ranked 59)
  14. Graham (Ranked 120)
  15. Henry (Ranked 5)
  16. Evan (Ranked 153)
  17. Hugo (Ranked 378)
  18. Simon (Ranked 230)
  19. Owen (Ranked 31)
  20. Benjamin (Ranked 11)
  21. Adrian (Ranked 74)
  22. Bennett (Ranked 40)
  23. Ellis (Ranked 243)

  26. Flynn (Ranked 828)
  27. Vincent (Ranked 107)
  28. Miles (Ranked 44)
  29. Heath (Ranked 932)
  30. Silas (Ranked 71)
  31. Oliver (Ranked 3)
  32. Calvin (Ranked 132)
  33. Joel (Ranked 219)
  34. Tobias (Ranked 283)
  35. Dominic (Ranked 106)
  36. Roman (Ranked 42)
  37. August (Ranked 81)
  38. Nolan (Ranked 65)
  39. Cole (Ranked 182)
  40. Leon (Ranked 138)
  41. Griffin (Ranked 222)
  42. Wesley (Ranked 52)
  43. Declan (Ranked 139)
  44. Beau (Ranked 60)

Need help re-naming baby boy

Our baby boy is 2 months old already and I have not ever felt confident of his name – Athanasius, nn Thanny. I was discombobulated right after the birth and didn’t take time to decide slowly as planned.

My husband loves Athanasius and I do really love the meaning (immortal), and I love that it sounds like he should be debating heresies in the 4th century, but I worry it would be a burden for him. I can’t picture a high school girl saying she wants to go to the dance with Athanasius. I also feel like Thanny is sort of cute but also sounds like Fanny or Granny, and I don’t want it to harm his self-esteem.

When I tell people his name, I usually get politely evasive/blank reactions from friends and family, or slightly negative ones from strangers. I don’t want his first impression on people to be that way.

Do you have other ideas? Bonus if they mean immortal or something nature-based, or old-school but not as intense? Some that we like are Sebastian, Oscar, Roman, Demitry, Galen, and Julian, but I’m not sure if those fit him. He is already seeming like Athanasius/Thanny, I just don’t want to make life hard for him.

I’m also open to honest takes on Athanasius.

If r/namenerds was a country, this is what the top 50 would look like for girls

Admittedly, this is not for the whole year, I neither have the time or the patience to do this, but this was made using the comments on posts from the past month or so suggesting names for girls. These are the fifty names that were the most frequently suggested.

I also included the SSA rankings of the names from 2025, since I know a lot of people who post and comment are American, and the SSA lists are often referenced.

  49. Margaret (Ranked 112)
  50. Cleo (Ranked 577)

Notably, only 12 of these names actually ranked within the SSA top 50 for 2025. Some of the names that were very close to being in this top 50 were Daisy, Juliet, Emmeline, Colette, Rosemary, Celeste, Willow, Laurel, Freya, Quinn, Lily, and Valerie.

I also included a list of the names that I came across being suggested that amused me the most.

  1. Chamomile

I never realised how hypocritical a certain name subreddit was until now . . .

I probably can't say the name, but I'm sure you probably know.

I'm not Jewish, but I lurk in here since I find names from other cultures interesting, and this is one of the only active subreddits that has that type of content.

I've been an active user on the name subreddit for a while, probably about three years? Done quite a few posts and comments in that time.

And yes, I knew they were not the best with the whole 'Jewish names are Christian too' and 'Jews aren't a real minority', but wow, it really did surprise me.

Someone posted a list of names from a class they were in. Based off the year, they were still a child. These were all Jewish names, they were Jewish themselves, Israeli.

The post? Downvoted to nothing and then the comments, even more so. Someone said the names were beautiful. Downvoted seven times. The OP said they liked the name Yael, downvoted again. Another comment said they were surprised to see certain names, and wrote something in Hebrew, anglicised Hebrew at that, also downvoted.

And I think what gets me the most is you know what post they were all over recently? The names of children in Jewish kindergarten in the US, where most of the children were not even Jewish and did not have Jewish names. Yet they were all patting each other on the back about how open minded they are and how they just love names from other cultures.

And the most ironic part is they're obsessed with suggesting names like Ezra, Liora, Asher, Noa. You'd think they'd like some new ideas for them to throw around instead of the endless Genevieve, Vivienne, and Juliette!

To be honest, I've been feeling disillusioned by them for a while, and it might just be my final straw.

Beautiful boy 🩵 - We have a part 2!

Since I was so cruelly attacked by you uneducated heathens the other day who have never picked up a book, I’ve come up with a new list. I am not a troll or a teenaged girl, I'm a very sophisticated, mature, upper-class, and well-read woman in my early 30s who has decided to become a single mother via a sperm donor, because obviously I couldn't risk exposing my darling beautiful baby boy to someone who may be less educated and brilliant than myself.

And yes, I’ve read plenty of books, including Wuthering Heights, and I don’t give a damn about that particular association, as I can't help romanticising abusive men. After all, I could have fixed him!

Names:
Heathcliff (Cliff)
Atticus (Ace)
Dorian (Rory)
Isidore (Ike)
Earnest (Ernie)

I despise Heath, and yes, that spelling of Earnest is intentional, as I believe in naming my child after a character trait.

Christopher and James are the middle names under consideration. But don't you dare suggest them as a first name, because how would I be able to show off to everyone that I passed English class? And don't forget, I live in a very diverse and educated part of Eastern US!

What occupational name do you reckon is coming next?

I'm curious, at this point we're naming children Fisher, Shepherd, Porter, Fletcher, Thatcher, Baker, all of which I have seen on the other subreddit, so what do we think will be emerging next as the new favourite?

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised by something like Carpenter or Welder. But don't forget, it's got to be a very manly occupation, so it can become flung onto hundreds of little girls too 😂

Not really a rant, although I do find these names a bit ridiculous, but I couldn't find a better flair.

How alternate spellings affect the 2025 SSA name rankings for girls

And to preface, I do get that not all of these names would be pronounced exactly the same by everyone, but the ones that I grouped together, I felt that they were similar enough to be considered that way! Of course, I definitely didn't get all of the names that fall into this type of category, but these are the main ones that I found at the time.
