I never realised how hypocritical a certain name subreddit was until now . . .
I probably can't say the name, but I'm sure you probably know.
I'm not Jewish, but I lurk in here since I find names from other cultures interesting, and this is one of the only active subreddits that has that type of content.
I've been an active user on the name subreddit for a while, probably about three years? Done quite a few posts and comments in that time.
And yes, I knew they were not the best with the whole 'Jewish names are Christian too' and 'Jews aren't a real minority', but wow, it really did surprise me.
Someone posted a list of names from a class they were in. Based off the year, they were still a child. These were all Jewish names, they were Jewish themselves, Israeli.
The post? Downvoted to nothing and then the comments, even more so. Someone said the names were beautiful. Downvoted seven times. The OP said they liked the name Yael, downvoted again. Another comment said they were surprised to see certain names, and wrote something in Hebrew, anglicised Hebrew at that, also downvoted.
And I think what gets me the most is you know what post they were all over recently? The names of children in Jewish kindergarten in the US, where most of the children were not even Jewish and did not have Jewish names. Yet they were all patting each other on the back about how open minded they are and how they just love names from other cultures.
And the most ironic part is they're obsessed with suggesting names like Ezra, Liora, Asher, Noa. You'd think they'd like some new ideas for them to throw around instead of the endless Genevieve, Vivienne, and Juliette!
To be honest, I've been feeling disillusioned by them for a while, and it might just be my final straw.
Beautiful boy 🩵 - We have a part 2!
Since I was so cruelly attacked by you uneducated heathens the other day who have never picked up a book, I’ve come up with a new list. I am not a troll or a teenaged girl, I'm a very sophisticated, mature, upper-class, and well-read woman in my early 30s who has decided to become a single mother via a sperm donor, because obviously I couldn't risk exposing my darling beautiful baby boy to someone who may be less educated and brilliant than myself.
And yes, I’ve read plenty of books, including Wuthering Heights, and I don’t give a damn about that particular association, as I can't help romanticising abusive men. After all, I could have fixed him!
Names:
Heathcliff (Cliff)
Atticus (Ace)
Dorian (Rory)
Isidore (Ike)
Earnest (Ernie)
I despise Heath, and yes, that spelling of Earnest is intentional, as I believe in naming my child after a character trait.
Christopher and James are the middle names under consideration. But don't you dare suggest them as a first name, because how would I be able to show off to everyone that I passed English class? And don't forget, I live in a very diverse and educated part of Eastern US!
What occupational name do you reckon is coming next?
I'm curious, at this point we're naming children Fisher, Shepherd, Porter, Fletcher, Thatcher, Baker, all of which I have seen on the other subreddit, so what do we think will be emerging next as the new favourite?
Personally, I wouldn't be surprised by something like Carpenter or Welder. But don't forget, it's got to be a very manly occupation, so it can become flung onto hundreds of little girls too 😂
Not really a rant, although I do find these names a bit ridiculous, but I couldn't find a better flair.
How alternate spellings affect the 2025 SSA name rankings for girls
And to preface, I do get that not all of these names would be pronounced exactly the same by everyone, but the ones that I grouped together, I felt that they were similar enough to be considered that way! Of course, I definitely didn't get all of the names that fall into this type of category, but these are the main ones that I found at the time.
