Landslide cover

Hi all. I used to play in a band in Beijing called Girls Are Waiting To Meet You (GAWTMY) in 2008/09. We reformed in London recently after seventeen years apart. Our violinist Kirsten has an absolutely beautiful voice and we were thinking of a song that would give the audience something to really enjoy (especially those unfamiliar with our original songs). Anyway we chose Landslide and it went down really well. I thought this sub Reddit crew might enjoy the video!

Jesus Etc cover

I used to play in a band called Girls Are Waiting To Meet You (GAWTMY) when I lived in Beijing in 2008/09. We had violins and other instruments. After we left Beijing I discovered and got big big into Wilco. I was listening to Jesus Etc once and my wife said it reminded her of GAWTMY.

So when we reformed last week for our first show in 17 years I suggested to the band we cover this song. They'd never heard it before but fell in love (how could you not?). Anyway, I thought the Wilco reddit crew might appreciate hearing us play it.

I made a video of us playing it in rehearsals the day before the show. It went down well - you could see the two or three Wilco fans in our audience singing along.

Anyway here it is and if you like it please check out other GAWTMY tracks.

The photo above shows GAWTMY on the stage where we played Wilco Etc. I told the crowd Jeff Tweedy was practically my kid's babysitter (not sure if anyone got the reference)

Hello. I'm an amateur singer songwriter and I've never had proper training. I tend to sing on the edge of my vocal range and it's always fine but then I arrange these ambitious things. Last year it was recording an album in one day. The recording went well but I rehearsed a lot in the run up and it hurt when I was singing so much so I basically stopped for a week before the day.

This time I'm reforming a band who said coming from all over the world. We have two days of rehearsals and the show.

Last night my voice started hurting again... Mainly in the throat.

I'm 42 and wondering if perhaps my higher range is just going. Also wondering if I'm partly psyching myself out or perhaps I've just got poor technique and don't take warming up seriously for hour long practice sessions at home. Or maybe all of these things?

Any advice appreciated!

Hi all, I've recently begun the journey into the world of David Berman. I've been a Pavement fan for years and have recently been listening to them more. I always thought Silver Jews were a side-project of theirs or something but Spotify shuffle kept offering up things like Random Rules and I'd say this was the week I really started to get hooked. Listened to the first two albums all the way through today and have been doing the 'This is Silver Jews' playlist for the 'hits'. Then dug a bit deeper and read about purple mountains and it's very heart-breaking. Expect this is an obvious point but the lyrics are just wonderful. Funny, sad, poignant, funny and clever.

I've seen Actual Air on bookstores sites and wondered if it's worth it. Curious what people get from that book.

Favourite lyric so far is from the first record when he uses the line about drinking 50,000 beers that wash against him like the sea. Genius. And tragic that it was all too much for him.

Any other advice for things to watch/read to go deeper?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Wilco fans who are guitarists. I've gotten great advice on here for making music. I'm playing a gig next month and it's the first gig I've done in a while with an amp. I've got an epiphone casino going into a fender Mustang gtx100. I've found pretty good settings to capture something of the Jeff Tweedy sound (using an emulation of a 1957 tweed) but for the songs where I'm using my j45... Would you go into the sound desk or use the amp? Wondering what Jeff does when he's switching because it looks like he uses the same guitar lead. Any advice appreciated.

And if of interest the band I'm playing in got some airtime on BBC 6 music yesterday ahead of our show (any London based Wilco fans are welcome. We may well cover Jesus Etc because we have a violinist!). The radio playvery exciting. You can check it out here:

Thanks in advance for any guitar sound advice

Hi everyone,

Long-time listener, first-time poster here. I wanted to share a bit of a surreal full-circle moment we’re having.

Back in 2008, a few of us formed a band in Beijing called Girls Are Waiting To Meet You (GAWTMY). We had a wild year, released an album, made a DIY video for our song 'Zombie Girl' that did some numbers back then, and then... life happened. We scattered across the globe—London, LA, Germany, Shenzhen—and haven't played together in over 15 years.

Fast forward to now: we’ve decided to fly everyone into London for a one-night-only reunion on May 15th.

The reason I'm posting here specifically is that Amy Lamé just played 'Zombie Girl' on her 6 Music show! For an independent, DIY project that started in a basement in China nearly two decades ago, hearing it on 6 Music was pretty special.

If you’re into art-punk, cinematic violin, or just love a good "band getting back together for the hell of it" story, we’d love for you to check us out.

  • The Tune: You can find 'Zombie Girl' and our other stuff (including the incredible video for Zombie Girl) on our Linktree: linktr.ee/gawtmy
  • The Show: Friday, 15th May @ MAP Studio Cafe, Kentish Town.

It’s going to be a bit chaotic, very loud, and possibly the only time this line-up will ever be in the same room again.

Would love to see some of the 6 Music family there!

Cheers,
GAWTMY
