How to show support and opposition in public?

I'm a straight white guy. But, I go to a lot of public events that have a lot of diversity. I play a lot of games and frequent places that are meant to be safe spaces for kids, LGBT, everyone. I noticed, a few people have been wearing anti LGBT apparel... Things like "I support LGBTQ" and then below it says something like "Liquor, Guns, Beer...." which appalled me in a place thought to be a safe place for all.

What can I adorn myself or my gear with that just says "Hi, I'm anti bigot, anti racists, safe person". Something which says I'm an ally... But, also says "I am anti bigot" to send a message to creeps doing this sort of thing? I don't want to wear a big shirt every day in all caps. But, I would like it to be obvious. A hat seems a bit too much all the time. I was thinking like a big pin or patch on my bag?

Father died, sibling won't tell me anything. I need help figuring this out.

My father died last month, we was around 70. My sibling lived near them. None of us had a good relationship with him, but he was retired over by them and past stroke #1. I didn't have any ongoing problems with my sibling. But, they hadn't contacted me for around a year. I got a call that said my father had an heart attack from my sibling. Turns out, my siblings significant other had died from an overdose last year and they never even told me about it. I found this out at the same time. I was completely shocked by this.

They were immediately cold on the phone, said they have power of attorney and are going to advocate for my father. I didn't hear anything back from calls or texts for 2-3 days. I tried to call and text A LOT, no response. Then, I finally got a text saying he was being moved to hospice. I called the hospital trying to find out the situation. But, I wasn't on the contact list. Even though I repeatedly texted to put me on, I was never put on it.

Then I got a phone call again early in the morning telling me he had died 2 days later. We always had an agreement that we would split everything we got 50/50. Then, they wouldn't answer my calls, respond to text or emails. They are just contacting me about what they want. Now, it's to sign for cremation authorization. But, they still haven't answered simple questions like... is there a will? I need his information for paperwork as well.

I asked if perhaps there was a problem and they weren't getting my emails? No reply for a day and then a text with just directions for a zoom ceremony...

I'm half way across the world at the moment. I have no idea what's going on. Has this happened to anyone else and you figured it out? What exactly are they doing? Could they be on drugs? Screwing me over? I'm really not sure why they're behaving this way and I'm not sure what rights I have to get information I need... They died in North Carolina.

Moved Into a “Cleaned” Rental and Found Heavy Grime How Would You Handle This?

I had to move abruptly due to having habitability issues that my previous landlord would not fix. Even the county inspector got involved and they still didn't fix it. Turns out, after a plumber opened the wall, there was an uncapped sewage pipe right behind my bathroom sink area for 15 months.

So I had to move and find a place within a month. Somehow I did. In a crazy rental market I found a cool place that honestly seemed underpriced.

Of course, they kept rushing me to sign the lease because “other applicants want to sign.” They swore up and down to me, including in email, that it would be properly cleaned and the rug replaced.

They replaced the rug.

But… it is not even close to cleaned.

There is grime caked into the light switches. I don’t even know how that happens. Maybe mechanics lived there? But there is literally grime and crud caked onto and into railings, visibly on fixtures, everywhere.

The smoke detectors are so old and smoke stained they look painted orange.

The bathroom fan has that dust-cake wall around it from never being cleaned.

There are ants moving between a hole in the wall behind the toilet and under the toilet on the second floor.

The dishwasher is too dirty to use and the racks are visibly brown.

The oven was not cleaned and is caked with grime.

Now that I finally went there during a well-lit time of day, I can see the living room has 20-foot ceilings… but somebody painted off-white over white… but only for the first 10 feet lol. And the off-white paint is peeling.

The carpet is decently replaced, but it’s going to take us something like 14–60 hours to clean this place properly. I think things like smoke alarms, light fixture covers, glass, bulbs, fixtures, etc. either need to be thoroughly cleaned or replaced entirely.

Honestly, things like the switches and fixtures would probably be cheaper to replace than clean.

The front 5x10 porch area looks like it got hit by a hurricane 15 years ago and nobody touched it since. Debris, dried grass, shrubbery everywhere, and two holes in the porch floor.

My thing is… it would honestly be ideal for the owner, property management, AND tenant to just get this place fully up to date and clean. It feels like:

  • ~$300 for a deep clean
  • ~$3k for a proper white repaint
  • ~$1k for decent replacement appliances
  • a few hundred dollars of labor for the porch

…would make the place look amazing.

The property management is rigid, but they DID get the owner to replace the carpet, which tells me I might be able to reason with them and the landlord.

Some things though just flat out need replacement.

How would you approach this situation?

We already started our move-in date, and now we’re depressed because it’s so dirty and it feels hopeless trying to get anything done through current property management/rental culture.
