Looking for a truly Milanese restaurant for risotto, ossobuco & cotoletta

Hi everyone!

My family and I will be in Milan in December and we'd really like to have one or two meals that are genuinely Milanese rather than tourist-oriented.

We're specifically looking to experience the classic dishes properly:

- Risotto alla Milanese

- Ossobuco alla Milanese

- Cotoletta alla Milanese

- Mondeghili

- Cassoeula, if it's being served in December

- Other traditional Milanese/Lombard dishes you think we shouldn't miss

We're especially interested in a traditional trattoria/osteria with an old-school, family-run atmosphere — somewhere that locals actually enjoy going, rather than somewhere that's primarily recommended to tourists.

For at least one of the meals, we'd also really appreciate a restaurant with a **good Italian/Lombard wine selection**, preferably somewhere where we can explore local wines rather than just having a generic wine list. We're interested in Amarone/Valpolicella, Valtellina wines, Franciacorta, etc.

We're not necessarily looking for the cheapest place, and we're happy to spend for a genuinely great meal. We're also considering doing one more upscale/Michelin-style dinner, so recommendations for a more contemporary restaurant would be welcome too — especially if it's somewhere that still has a strong connection to Milanese/Italian cuisine.

We're staying in Milan around December 16–18.

If you were taking a friend visiting Milan for the first time and wanted to show them what Milanese food is actually about, **where would you take them?**

Grazie!

Riva del Garda vs Sirmione in December - which is better for our trip?

Hi! We’ll be traveling through Northern Italy from December 6-19, 2026 and are trying to choose between Riva del Garda and Sirmione for December 11-12. We’ll have a car and will be going to Verona on December 13.

We’re looking for:

  • dramatic lake and mountain scenery
  • strong Christmas atmosphere
  • somewhere lively in December, especially in the evening
  • good local food
  • historic or unusual things to see
  • enough to do for 1-2 nights

From what we’ve seen, Riva seems stronger for mountain scenery and an Alpine feel, while Sirmione seems stronger for the castle, Roman ruins and historic peninsula.

For people who know both, what does each one do better than the other in December?

We’re also wondering about the drive to Riva in mid-December:

  • Is it generally easy to reach by car?
  • Are snow or icy roads a common issue?
  • Do you need to cross any difficult mountain passes?

Based on what we’re looking for, which would you choose for December 11–12?

Balsamic Vinegar Producer Tour

Hi! We’ll be traveling through Northern Italy from December 6–19, 2026, and will be passing through Modena while traveling from Bologna toward Verona/Lake Garda.

We’ve already decided that visiting a Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena DOP producer is a definite part of the trip.

We’re not looking for a general food tour or a walking tour around shops in Modena. We’d rather visit a small family-run acetaia directly, ideally meeting the family or producer.

We’d especially like to:

  • see the actual barrel batteries and learn the aging process
  • taste different ages, ideally including 12- and 25-year balsamic
  • have a private or small-group visit
  • find somewhere authentic rather than overly commercial
  • possibly have a traditional meal or food pairing

We’ll have a car, so countryside locations are completely fine.

Has anyone personally visited an acetaia they would strongly recommend, especially one that welcomes visitors in December?

Best Lake Garda town for mountains, Christmas markets, food and lively atmosphere in mid-December 2026?

We’ll be traveling through Northern Italy December 6–19, 2026, on a route roughly:

Bologna → Modena → Verona → Lake Garda → Milan

We expect to be around Lake Garda in mid-December, approximately December 11–15, although we haven’t fixed the exact Garda nights yet.

We’re looking for somewhere with:

  • dramatic mountain and lake scenery
  • ideally snowy mountains in the background
  • a strong Christmas market / Christmas atmosphere
  • lively in December, especially in the evening
  • excellent local food and regional products
  • historic or unusual things to do
  • not necessarily extremely touristy

We’ll have a car, so train access isn’t important.

We’re currently considering Riva del Garda, Bardolino and Sirmione, with Riva especially appealing because we want that mountainous winter-lake scenery.

Which town would you choose specifically for mid-December 2026? Are there any Garda towns that look great in summer but become too quiet in winter?

We’ll also be in Verona around December 13 for Santa Lucia, so ideally we’d like the Garda portion to feel noticeably different from Verona.
