Learn Mokuhanga Printmaking with Sumi Ink

On Saturday, October 17 experience Mokuhanga and carve and print your own Japanese woodblock prints using sumi ink!

Mokuhanga is the Japanese art of woodblock printing. It began in China, was refined in Japan during the Edo Period, and is now enjoying a revival around the world as a nature-based art form.

Led by Patty Hudak, who trained in Japan, you’ll learn the entire process using handmade brushes, Japanese paper, starch glue, sumi, and a handheld baren. By the end you’ll have carved a block and printed a small edition of your own sumi prints.

In this class you’ll learn how to prepare your image, transfer it to the block, and carve with the hangito, a Japanese carving knife. Then you’ll dampen your paper, mix starch glue with sumi, brush on the ink, and print with a baren. We’ll also try specialty techniques like bokashi and gomazuri, and explore the history of sumi ink in Asia.

Mokuhanga is welcoming to all levels, so beginners are absolutely invited. All supplies are included!

Join us Saturday, October 24 for a Mini Pumpkin Chuckin Workshop. This is a hands-on community workshop inspired by Vermont’s annual Pumpkin Chuckin’ festival.

Kids and their grown-ups will design and build their own miniature trebuchets from loose parts, test, refine, and then battle it out by launching candy pumpkins and fun-sized candy bars!

This workshop is part of our new series of Weekend Community Workshops, where youth and their adults learn and experiment side by side, connecting with the wider maker community, and building skills and confidence together.

Come help the Project Pride & Joy push their community art quilts over the finish line this Saturday, August 22nd at Generator Makerspace in Burlington.

No sewing experience needed!

There are plenty of different tasks to complete, and many hands make light work. Here's what you can expect to jump into:

• Binding quilts – an easy skill to pick up on the flyTying quilts – the simplest hand-quilting method, with room for several people to work on the same quilt at once
• Hand quilting – just a bit trickier than tying, still simple, and also open to multiple people at a time
• Appliqué and embellishments – sew on appliqué pieces and add embellishments to different quilt
• "Heck Yeah!" affirmation quilt – write and decorate affirmations for queer youth on quilt blocks for a special quilt headed to Outright Vermont

Bring yourself, your fam, a few friends you haven't seen in a while - all ages and abilities are welcome! Come as you are and learn a new skill or two while you help out. Skilled volunteers from local quilt guilds and fabric shops will be on hand at the technique-focused stations to help guide folks along.

Drop in anytime on Saturday, August 22nd from 10:00am-3:00pm and stay as long as you'd like.

We've commissioned quilt designs from 10 local artists and are organizing a series of free, public crafting events inviting members of the community to contribute to the production of the quilts. The quilts will be exhibited during the month of September, then auctioned off to fundraise for Outright Vermont​.

Come Learn To Weave!

Fiber artist Courtney Salerno is hosting a beginner-friendly Frame Loom Weaving Workshop in Burlington on Tuesday, August 11th at 5:30pm.

Participants will earn the basics of setting up a loom, choosing yarns, and weaving techniques like plain weave, rya knots, and soumak. Everyone will leave with their own small woven wall hanging and the skills to keep weaving at home.

Jennifer's prints draw inspiration from faceted garnets, a collection of leaves, and love itself. During the showcase you'll get to learn about her process, how her practice evolved over the residency, and what she's learned along the way. Come ask questions, get a behind-the-scenes look at woodblock printing, and see how a residency shapes an artist's work.

Jennifer is a Burlington-based printmaker, object-based sculptor, and collage artist, and she will be donating 50% of all proceeds from work sold back to Generator's Artist in Residence program, helping to keep this opportunity alive for the next artist.
