I built an open-source library and fleet management platform for ESP32 OTA updates

Hi!

I've been working on a project called Otamatic and wanted to share it here hoping it could help someone.

The idea came from a real nightmare: a while back, me, and a client literally had to drive around the city to update ESP32s deployed in the field. Most OTA implementations out there set up a local WebServer on the ESP32 where you open a browser, navigate to the local IP, and upload a binary. That’s totally fine for a single node on your home network, but it gets annoying real quick if your devices are behind NATs, cellular routers, or dynamic IPs where you can't just open incoming ports.

This is why I decided to work on a fully open-source library with all features from the most famous OTA libraries (and a companion web platform) you can use to add OTA on your projects in less than 5 minutes.

It supports advanced features like scheduled release, staged rollout releases, release monitoring, device monitoring and more is coming if I see enough interest!

If you're working on hobby or small projects, there is also a free plan you can use. Otherwise just include the library and point it to your own web server!

How to filter search_files and list_files results?

I'm using Cline inside both VS Code and CLI mode, and I'm hitting a frustrating limitation.

The search_files and list_files tools scan directories that should be ignored by default (e.g. vendor/, node_modules/, bin/, obj/, etc.). This floods the results with thousands of irrelevant files, making the tool outputs unusable and the model is then forced to use the terminal to get relevant information.

I tried configuring a .clineignore file, it doesn't work and it is now deprecated. The replacement feature explicitly states it does not apply to search_files and list_files tools.

Do you know a solution for this? It doesn't make sense that the tools are unusable and it needs to use the terminal instead.

What is causing my short circuit?

Hi! I designed a custom PCB to power an ESP32 dev board, but I'm encountering a short circuit between VCC and GND. I can't locate the cause.

I already identified an error where I inverted positive and negative output of the bridge rectifier, but I should be able to fix this by desoldering it and resoldering the 2 pins inverted (or not?). There still is at least another error somewhere that is shorting VCC and GND but I can't find it.

I would really appreciate if someone could help my sport where the error is.

Thanks everyone who replied. Seems like the reverse polarity damaged one of the components. Tried with a bare new pcb and everything is working

Missing Debug/Release dropdown in .NET MAUI project (only shows Any CPU)

Hi! I'm working on a .NET MAUI project, and I've run into a strange issue.

As you can see, the configuration dropdown only shows "Any CPU". If I want to switch between Debug and Release, I have to open Configuration Manager and change the Active Solution Configuration manually.

Previously, the Debug/Release dropdown was located exactly where the "Any CPU" dropdown is now.

I've already tried resetting Visual Studio to its default settings, but the issue persists. At this point, I suspect it might be something specific to my project's configuration.

Do you have any ideas on how to solve this?

What are you using for inline completions?

I'm trying cline after the recent GitHub Copilot pricing changes and I think this is very good at replacing it.

The only thing I'm missing are the inline completions. As they're not featured in cline (and, from what I read, there is no plan the implement it) what are you using?

Spending hundreds on AI coding tools — what kinds of projects actually justify this?

I keep seeing posts here and elsewhere about developers spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars each month on AI coding subscriptions. And now I'm curious: what kind of solo projects are you people working on that generates enough revenue to justify these costs consistently?
