Umbanda and Batuque in Rio Grande do Sul

Hello im not Brazilian but im researching about african derived religions in the americas and ive come to see that oficially Rio grande do sul is the state with the biggest % of followers of this religions in the country at 3.2% of the population. As in majority of places the census probably understimates it atleast from what ive read. And i have a series of questions.

  1. Why do you think its gotten so wideaspread across black, mixed and white people in the state?

  2. What is bigger Umbanda or Batuque?

  3. Is public perception there different to the rest of brazil about that subject?

  4. For what ive read is mainly concentrated in Porto alegre, Pelotas, Rio grande, the coastal region and in the border with uruguay where this religions are also fairly popular. Do you think its true?

Thanks in advance

Umbanda in Cape Verde

I was wondering as the country has a lot of influenced from Brazil and consumes a lot of Brazilian media if Umbanda had spread to the country. In Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay has because of closeness and cultural influenced and in Uruguay has become pretty widespread.
Online I only found some things
Thanks in advance

Why Santeria and other afro religions are so popular in Cuba?

Hello im not cuban and i was wondering why Santeria and Palo got so popular in Cuba. I know ofcourse the history of slavery and that in Cuba they are a lot of afro descendants but that doesnt explain all because in places like the DR or Venezuela they are also this kinds of religions (cult of Maria lionza and 21 divisions) but they arent nearly as popular as in Cuba.

And other countries as Panama where afro descendants make up 30% of the population of Colombia which also has a lot around 15% didnt developed this kind of religions.

In the Americas Cuba is only second to Haiti in the spread of an african derived religion among the population and the only other country in which there is a comparable fenomenon is Brazil.

So why do you think its so popular and wideaspread in Cuba?

Thanks in advance

Afro religions in Uruguay

Hello im researching about african american religions and came across a article about Umbanda in uruguay and i have a series of questions.

  1. Are they foreign to Uruguay? Everywhere i read it puts they came from Brazil in the early to mid XXth century but Urguay also has a sizeable Afro population ( I think 10% in the last census) and part of them came directly from Brazil in the mid to late XIX century from río grande do sul an state very marked by african american religions like Batuque. So didnt the Afro uruguayan population have a similar religion before the arrival of brazilian Umbanda and Batuque.

  2. Are they more related to some specific sector of the population?

From what ive read it more common in afro uruguayans and in poor people.

  1. How many people practice them? In some official goberment estimates put it around 2.8% of the population.

Do you think is lower or higher? Ive seen photos of Montevideo beaches full of people in the festivities of the Orixa Lemanja.

  1. How are they socially viewed? Is there much sigma around them?

  2. Whats your opinion of them?

Thanks in advance

Hello I’m not Uruguayan obviously but I’ve been researching about the Afro Uruguayan population and I’ve been surprised as for how many they are (according to the 2023 they are 10.6% of the population) and I have some questions for Uruguayans and the people who have lived in Uruguay.

Do you think the census numbers are correct? Are the under estimated or over estimated? Do mixed Afro Uruguayan people count in?

I’ve seen that they mostly live in Artigas (21,8%), Rivera (21 %),Tacuarembó (15,1%), Salto (14,5%), Cerro Largo (13%), Treinta y Tres (12,2%), Rocha (10,9%) and Montevideo (10,1 %). As people who are from there or have been/lived you think this figures are Accurate?

The Afro Uruguayan culture of Montevideo like candombe I greatly documented but I have not found much about the Afro Uruguayan culture of other departments , I’ve read that a lot of the Afro Uruguayans of Artigas, Riviera and other places on the north of Uruguay are descended from escaped Brazilian slaves and people who have been migrating from neighbouring Rio grande do sul since then so I wonder if they share some culture with Brazil.

Do you think there is discrimination in Uruguay? I’ve read that the first black congressman was only elected in 2005 (the guy is the environmental minister now) and like 46% of them are below the poverty line.

Is there any kind of African derived religion in Uruguay like Santería or candomblé?

Thanks in advance

In the Brazilian census pretos/blacks are 10% of the population and pardos/mixed race are 45% of the population other estimates and polls like latinobarometro put the black population at 22%, mulatos at 14% and other race/mestizo and 10% . As Pardo is a super broad term that encompasses people from very different ancestry and phenotypes and the definition varies by region, someone considered pardo in the northeast wouldn’t be considered pardo in the south . What percentage of Brazilian pardos do you think are African leaning genetically and in phenotype

Afro puerto ricans are in the census black 7% alone and black 17.5% alone and in combination.

The rest are two or more races 39,9%, another race 25.5% and white alone 17.1 %.

I have two questions.

  1. the people who marked black in combination are people that while recognising they have other ancestries know their main one is african and thats why they dont identify as two or more races alone or another race?

  2. What percentage of the population of puerto rico do you think is black ( 50% african ancestry or more)?

Im a big reggae fan and as a result from it I have learnt things about the Rastafari faith and I have a few questions for those who are part of it or have lived in places with Rastas

Is Rastafari still popular and growing, or is it mostly something that peaked with earlier generations (70s–90s)?

Are younger people still joining, or is it mainly older members now?

Outside of Jamaica, what parts of the Caribbean have noticeable Rastafari communities or influence? I’ve heard places like Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St. Vincent, Grenada, Antigua, and the Bahamas have some presence, but I’m not sure how strong it is in each.

And for those who’ve interacted with Rastas personally, what have your experiences been like?

I’m especially interested in how it’s evolving today compared to its roots.
