Seafood fry-up at the beach!

Was craving seafood on our beach vacation. The local grocery was sparse on vegan options but I found hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, tater tots and chilli dipping sauce. The hearts of palm are so much tastier than fish, artichoke hearts were a yummy substitute for oysters. Just loved this meal!!

Collecting unemployment - started new business that isn't break-even yet

Got laid off in my 50's after a year of job searching . To cut costs, I left NYC to job-search remotely. It took a while to get unemployment because I had a severance package, but finally got approved in the system. I became concerned that I had aged out of my industry (marketing) so I took out 5 credit cards and opened a small cafe. It's not breaking even yet, but it's showing potential. My unemployment payments are still my only income since any business income is going to payroll and business expenses. I've contiunued to file the way I did when I was actively looking, but that's going to get me in trouble if I get audited and can't prove I'm applying to jobs. Should I just be honest on my weekly applications that I am working now but have 0 income? Has anyone else been in that situation?

Gift Cards

Customers are asking me for gift cards. My relationship with Toast is so fraught with anxiety and hatred that I don't even know where to begin. If I hate Toast so much that I can't even make myself figure out gift cards, is it time to leave? I still have so many problems with the basic menu, and I don't know how to count the drawer down at night because it doesn't remember the count from the day before so what is even the point?

End of day closing process?

Two months into my cafe business I've spent so much time just trying to figure out how to use Toast - setting up the menu, payroll, etc. and amid the chaos of me constantly trying to do 5 things at the same time all day long, I haven't figured out a closing routine for the POS. I understand in theory what is supposed to happen, but I don't know how much Toast is supposed to do for me and how much is just going to be a manual process for me. Can someone help me out because I get no help from Toast.

The day starts with cash in the drawer that is reflected in what I counted down the night before. The day should end with the system telling me how much cash SHOULD be in the drawer based on the cash transactions that took place during the day. And then I count down the drawer and see if it matches. And that's how I know if my employees are stealing from me. Right?

So does Toast do this or do I need to pull reports and find this out on my own, because so far I'm finding the Toast pre-set closing routine not particularly helpful or informative. What am I missing?
