Ex colleague/friend left his job to care give and is struggling to find a job after

Hi everyone, posting on behalf of a friend who’s been going through a tough stretch and could really use some advice or leads.

Earlier this year, he left his job to become a full-time caregiver for his father after he was diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, he passed away in March, and since then he’s been trying to get back into the workforce.

He has about 3–5 years of experience in admin/office-related roles and has been actively applying for jobs again — likely over 200 applications so far — mostly for similar admin positions. However, he hasn’t managed to secure a single interview yet.

In some cases, he’s only been offered roles like packer or very low-entry positions, which feel quite far removed from his previous experience and skill set in office-based work. It’s been quite discouraging for him, especially after trying consistently for months.

He only has an ITE certificate, but he is hardworking, reliable, and very willing to start immediately in a proper admin/office role again.

We’re hoping to ask the community for advice on:

- What he might be missing in his job applications (CV, positioning, etc.)
- Whether there are better platforms or agencies for admin roles in Singapore
- How to better explain a caregiving employment gap in a way employers understand
- Any companies currently more open to hiring entry/mid-level admin staff

He’s open to honest feedback and just trying to get back on his feet after a difficult year. Any advice or direction would really mean a lot.

Thank you for reading.
- edit, is father not mother

I’ve been scouring the whole of Osaka trying to find a Fujifilm x100vi that isn’t overpriced and preferably closer to retail. No luck after walking around 15 stores in Osaka. Since my trip to Osaka is rather short, I thought I’d do some homework before I land in Tokyo yesterday. Similarly, I tried googling and found some areas to have very limited stocks but they were extremely far away from my hotel. Like I’d have to spend a whole day in that area alone sort of thing.

So yeah, told my wife why not just walk around our hotel in Ueno and grab something before heading back to the hotel.

So as I was walking around the block, I noticed they had a bigcamera store down the aisle. It was 7:45 pm, told my wife let’s just do a quick glance. And so we did, went to level 7, looked around and found that the x100vi was not on display and wasn’t even put up in the store for you to feel and see the price tag. Bummer…. So I walked past the payment counter since it was closer to the lift and noticed a Ricoh vi Monochrome. I thought why not?since it’s sold out almost everywhere. Went to counter and for some odd reason, instead of asking for Ricoh, my mouth accidentally blurted out the Fujifilm x100vi to the service staff. I know it sounds dumb but it happened. I said, “sorry, I meant the Ricoh back there,” as I pointed it out.

The staff looked at me and took out a paper and asked me to repeat the Fujifilm model… I looked at him and said ohh it’s xxx. Instead of writing it down as x100vi, he wrote x100fi….. and told me to wait when suddenly a random dude appeared right beside me asking some questions regarding his purchase. That conversation lasted for a good 45 seconds and at this point I thought, man just tell him I wanted the Ricoh. As I was about to say excuse me, he turned his back, walked to the same area the Ricoh was sitting and just pulled a box from behind it… and what do you know it was really a x100vi in silver!!!

He walked back and asked me if this is the one I wanted? I said yes, instantly paid and left a happy boy. 256,000 yen after tax free, retail price. I asked why wasn’t this shown on the display and the counter staff just shrugged and said he was told to just place it there and that it actually deters scalpers from buying it in bulk as well. So moral of the story is, don’t go to a store and see that it’s sold out but ask the counter staff if they have any. This is the first time I asked at the counter instead of asking the staffs attending to the camera floor area after 15 attempts in Osaka.

TLDR: walked through Osaka and couldn’t find one after 15 attempts. Randomly passed by a bigcamera store near my

Hotel in Tokyo on a raining evening and found one just because I asked. So do be sure to ask and not assume it’s sold out or not put out on display.

Not sure if this is the right place to post but as I walking around Osaka Namba area, I wanted to get a preowned grand seiko so badly after trying it out at the boutique. Went through many shops and all they had were new Rolex models that weren’t any different to the prices in my home country. And it was at this last store, Okura, did I dragged my wife in saying one last one. It’s 7:30, raining and I just went straight to the watch isle and lo behold, this thing was just sitting there among the newer Rolex models 12xxxx. Then it hit me, the grand seiko is nice but the bracelet isn’t great and it’s quartz.

For double the price, I’d get a solid Rolex made in early 2000s that also fits the white dial category. Instantly tried it on and made the purchase on the spot. No box and papers but it looks to be genuine and the store can attest it is since they are one of the most popular preowned watch and luxury stores around Japan. Can anyone tell me if I made a good deal topping up 2-3 grand more for a Rolex instead of a grand seiko?
