I wanna buy books for my parents

I wanna gift my parents each a book

My mom's favorite book is Huckleberry Finn. She also likes Frankenstein, Narnia, The Book Thief, and autobiographies, specially if the authors went through very difficult times. I would like to give her a book preferably with a female protagonist who travels somewhere, faces a lot of adversity, and who is very idealist

My dad loves photography and he has read many books about important photographers like Eugene Smith or Dorothea Lange, among others. He also likes historical novels, like The Geisha or The Name of the Rose. He also likes Murakami. I would like to give him a book about an artist living in an interesting time period

Thanks for your suggestions

How come so many safaitic people were literate?

I was watching this video about the safaitic inscriptions and one thing the video doesn't address is: How come so many people were literate?

This is a pastoral society and seemingly everyone is literate enough to make these inscriptions in the rocks, that is very surprising

Also, if people in pre-islamic arabia already had a writing system that was seemingly widespread, why did they develop the current arabic script?

Wu of Liang built the largest dam in the world at the time, twice. Where can I learn more about this construction project?

I'm weirdly fascinated by this story. I can't stop thinking about the thousands of people who worked there. Is there a book I can read about this?

I thought it would a Chekhov's gun, there would be a clever explanation, but no... Part of me thinks maybe it's something about fucking in the car? Is this a dirty joke so convoluted I didn't get it?

I was in the fourth floor, looking for a book deep bewteen the shelves, when I turn and see a guy sitting in a chair (why was a chair there?). He looked red and sweaty, and I kid you not, he had a book with a japanese title over his lap

I can't read japanese, so I have no idea what the book was about, maybe it had those historical paintings the japanese are famous for... Anyway, he ignored me completely. He gave me vibes that he was thinking "if I don't move, maybe he won't see me..." and to be honest, I was thinking the same

I only hope he didn't damage the book

Here's my understanding: Lafayette wanted to prove black people could manage businesses effectively. To this end he bought a plantation in French Guyana. The law prevented him from freeing all the slaves, but they were free in practice. Those people were now in charge of managing the plantation and they did so well

Sadly Lafayette was later imprisoned and his property was seized by the French government, who sold the slaves, disbanding the plantation

HOWEVER slavery was later abolished in the French Empire and its colonies... before being reinstated by Napoleon... and then abolished again...

In all that turmoil, do we know what happened to the people who worked in this plantation?

Also, did Lafayette succeed in proving his point? Did he convince slavers that black people could indeed manage businesses? I imagine that most of them ignored him or came up with excuses, but were there at least a few who changed their minds?
