Overload Request Denied COE

Was denied to take 21 credits this fall under COE and am confused as to why when I was approved for 19 previously. They told me to contact my department head with questions.

Mold & Cockroaches in Dorm

Mold growing in the basement of SSR as the ceiling has been dripping water for over a week and the cockroach problem is getting worse. I contacted Campus Housing during the Spring semester regarding the frequent cockroach sightings but nothing was done. Anybody have any suggestions on how to escalate these issues? Do I just contact Campus Housing leadership staff and hope for the best?

Older student considering biochem

I'm looking to go back to school for biochemistry and I'm wondering if my current plan is feasible.

For background, I was a former pre-med student at a different university that had strong but tough bio and chem departments (especially chem). Despite serious notetaking, previewing slides/readings, reviewing practice problems, and going to every office hour, TA session, etc., I still was overwhelmed and couldn't keep up with a 12-15 credit course load. I dropped out.

In the seven years since, I earned an associates degree in allied healthcare, and have full-time and part-time jobs that I'm juggling. My goal with school this time is to pursue a BS in biochemistry and gain research experience that could land me in a full-time lab role (or candidacy for a PhD program), but I would only be able to take a class or two at a time. Is this goal possible? Will professors choose to recruit a student who has as many competing priorities as me or who works through coursework as slowly as me? Are there any tips or things to be aware of before I jump into this?

Hey UIC, Searching for Pro-Choice Men!!

Hey, YOU❗

My name is Stephen and I'm proudly representing an organization called Men 4 Choice. I'm a recently-graduated student from UIC hoping to connect with likeminded folks at universities in the Chicago area who may be interested in becoming better activists, adding something to their resume, or simply being a better ally! If you believe bodily autonomy is not just a women's issue and that men need to **SPEAK UP** or are curious to learn more about how to, read on!

The opportunity --

Show up for around an hour or so for one of three virtual chats in which you'll learn how to better connect and converse with men in the fight for reproductive justice. Don't worry, the ask isn't for much of your time AND its free! 😎

Who you are --

Ideally a college-aged man with ties to Chicagoland or the greater Midwest. We're looking specifically to mobilize people who can counteract the prevalence of toxic masculinity from the right, so unfortunately this opportunity does require being male-identifying. Besides that, **if you're not an exact fit for age and/or location, that's ok**! Likewise, your politics need not be anything specific other than supporting the right to choose. It's fine going into this not even having given much thought to being pro choice!

If you're interested --

Please reach out and send me a message! Exact dates and times for the presentations are yet to be determined, so your availability will help determine. These are planned to occur on both weekends and weekdays, afternoons and evenings, so don't hesitate! Likewise, **please share around to those who may be interested**.

Thanks for the read,

Stephen

Has anyone ever planned a late drop?

So, for summer semester I needed to reach at least 5 hours to apply for financial aid, so I added some bs 100 level class to my semester. I did this expecting to most likely drop it, I've done a late drop before but just because the class was too much on my plate (I had reached full time hours, so removing it made me part-time).

It didn't really affect anything but is there any real consequence to receiving financial aid and then dropping the class that made you eligible for it?

Packing for commute

Hi, I'm a commuting transfer student starting this fall, and I was wondering; how much "stuff" will commuters bring with them to school? Specifically for those taking public transit, because my commute will be like 1hr 20 min (metra&cta). I have classes mon-fri, and I'm nervous my backpack won't be big enough to hold all my bs. Is it uncommon for people to bring multiple bags or have fatass backpacks?

Additionally, how many people regularly utilize the commuter resource center, and if you do, do you rent a locker there? I recently seen the lockers and was sad to see how small they are, so is it worth it to rent one?

What’s up with all the dog walkers treating the campus like it’s an off-leash dog park

In the past few weeks, I’ve seen so many people just letting their dog off-leash to wander the quad like it’s their personal dog park. Has it always been like this? Just chilling and enjoying the beautiful green space and now I have random dogs running up with no leash while their owner is just like “eh whatever”

Master's or full-time first?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently studying at UIC majoring in Civil Engineering, and I’m set to graduate next year. Right now, I have an internship at a good company, and there’s a chance they may give me a return full-time offer.

I’m feeling really confused about what the best next step is, especially because I’m interested in structural engineering and I’m not sure how much a master’s degree is actually worth in the long run.
Right now, I feel stuck between these 3 options:

  1. Stay at UIC and do a part-time master’s while working full-time

This would let me start earning earlier, and my company might help pay for tuition. But I’ve heard working full-time while doing a master’s can get very hectic, and since I’d probably only take 1 or 2 classes at a time, it could drag on for years. Also, UIC is not considered a top school for Civil/Structural Engineering, so I’m not sure if it’s worth committing to that path.

  1. Go to a more reputable school full-time and try to get an RA/TA/assistantship

This seems like a good option because tuition could be waived, and I could finish my master’s first and get it over with. The downside is that I wouldn’t really be earning much during those 1–2 years, so financially it feels like I’d be giving something up.

  1. Do an online part-time master’s, like Purdue Global

This might be a little more manageable with full-time work, but it would still be stressful, and if I only do one course at a time, it might take forever to finish. I’m also not sure how much value employers in structural engineering place on an online degree like that.

I guess my biggest question is: how much is a master’s actually worth in structural engineering?
Does it significantly help with salary, career growth, or better opportunities in the future? Or does work experience matter more once you get your foot in the door?

Part of me wants to start earning as soon as possible, but another part of me feels like I should just get the master’s done early so I don’t have to keep worrying about school for the next 4–5 years.

For people already working in structural engineering, what would you do in my situation?
