New student and Freshers Advice

I'm an incoming new student at UoL, studying maths. I got in through clearing yesterday so i'm feeling a bit sort of out of the loop with it all.

on instagram, pages such as leedsfreshers2026 are advertising events during freshers week. I don't know if I should buy tickets for the events as a lot of them are nearly sold out, but I'm unsure if they are popular events to go to and I don't want to spend a tenner on tickets i'm not going to use, but equally I don't want to miss out on the 'main' events people go to.

I want to ask if any other incoming students this year have bought tickets for any of these events and also if they are in any UoL gcs, and if so where I can join these

and also do any already existing students have any advice for freshers week (when and where to buy tickets, and which events are popular) and any general advice they would give to an incoming 1st year student at Leeds.

Thanks

Clearing Advice (UoM and General advice)

context: i'm hoping to achieve higher than my predicteds and i've changed what course I want to do so i'm immediately withdrawing my offer on results day, if that's how it works (if I actually get the grades I need for better courses).

for Maths BSc at Manchester on both the course page and the clearing page on their website it says its available for clearing, but I saw somewhere that they are hoping and expecting not to be in clearing, I was wondering if anyone knows if it has any history of going into clearing in previous years?

also on results day where do I look to see if courses are in clearing do I look on each individuals unis website or on UCAS, and are both as accurate as each other?

and for anyone who has had previous success or experience in clearing what sort of questions do they ask and what they did on results day to like get on the phone as quickly as possible, and minimise stress

Studying further maths (FM) in a gap year - General Advice

I'm in year 13 and waiting on my grades for Maths, PE, and Business. It's a combo I fully regret now - I originally wanted to do sports science

I started year 12 doing FM, but dropped it in November as I had imposter syndrome in the class and didn't think I was good enough (a bit ridiculous ik), I fully regret this choice now. Over sixth form I loved maths. I'm hoping for at least an A, hopefully higher, but I don't want to jinx it.

since exams, i've completely switched what I want to do at uni, I'm now in-between: (least preferred) Accounting and Finance, Economics, and Maths. if I get the grade i'm going to try clearing with a couple of unis (one for maths one for Econ, though i'm expecting limited availability)

I'm really apprehensive about taking a gap year as I got into the rhythm of things towards the end of sixth form and don't want to sit around not studying. So I'm thinking of either studying AS or A-level FM as I both want to do it out of interest and also to help my gap year application, and I'm also considering sitting the TMAU for courses like Econ at Warwick

I wanted to ask if anyone has done AS/A-level FM as a private candidate? how did you get predicted grades, and where did you sit your exams? Did you ask your A-level maths teachers for advice? Will unis accept it even if I did it separately to my other 3 subjects? Is it worth doing the TMAU in my gap year?

thank you

Gap year application

I'm in year 13 waiting for results, since A-levels I've changed what I want to do at uni. planning to reapply in a gap year. I think I've met/exceeded what I need to go to uni for the potential courses I want to do. when applying to competitive courses will having my actual grades meeting/exceeding entry requirements increase my chances of receiving an offer over applying with predicteds? (e.g. courses like econ at Bath)

Reapplying during a gap year

I think I've met/exceeded what I need to go to uni for the potential courses I want to do (not going through clearing, I want to go to open days, and i'm split between 2/3 courses). when applying to competitive courses will having my actual grades, meeting/exceeding entry requirements increase my chances of receiving an offer? Economics personal statement advice

Hi, I’m potentially looking to apply for economics for 2027. I’m looking at Bath, KCL, Exeter, UoB, and others (not fully decided yet), I didn’t do fm so I can’t apply for the ‘top’ unis. I didnt do econ at alevel so I’m more leaning towards basing my ps on mathematical economics.

I’m into football and I find the economics of the 2026 World Cup interesting. I was thinking of using it as a hook for my ps by talking about:

- algorithmic dynamic pricing** **- how FIFA used real time algorithms to push ticket prices high (e.g World Cup final tickets over $30,000, and some reaching over $1million), and talking about like showcasing a monopoly, and inelasticity, etc. Here I would link in articles
- hydration breaks - how mandatory breaks were enforced even in cooler weather to create predictable revenue stream for US broadcasters, which contrasted against UK broadcasters who were prevented from showing advertisement due to regulatory caps

I want to sort of frame this as an optimisation and game theory problem.

Id then pivot into a book based on mathematical economics maybe ‘the Art of strategy’ and then maybe a podcast

This would be for the 1st question of the personal statement. I am worried this will sound to ‘businessy’ and will not sort of idk ‘tick boxes’ when it being looked at

I basically just wanted to ask anyone who’s at uni or who has an offer for econ (or literally anyone else who wants to give some input) if this would be okay or if it’s a completely ridiculous idea and sounds to much like a business essay?

Thanks
