Are there any organised external teacher to teacher CPD events in the UK?

When I taught overseas, there was a big annual CPD event where teachers from international schools across the country and the region could attend.

The whole thing relied on teachers who were attending volunteering to run sessions on something they were particularly good at,had been developing, or had been trialling in their own classrooms.

It was genuinely some of the best CPD I ever attended because it was based on what teachers in different schools were actually doing in practice and what had worked for them. You always came away with practical ideas that you could take back to your own classroom and try for yourself.

There were also smaller local versions of it on a more regular basis hosted by teachers at different schools maybe in the city/region where you were teaching and I vaguely recall something called teach meet, not sure if that’s still a thing…?

I have been back teaching here for six years now and the only CPD I have been on has been in school. Similar to this but just with teachers within the same school. Although it is interesting, I think the benefits of being able to meet up with teachers from other schools is lost and it ends up being the same strategies that you already know are going on with your school, the freshness of outside perspectives is lost. I say it’s interesting but potentially only mildly I would say it actually became something of a chore in the end last term.

Are there any events like the ones that I have described going on in the UK that perhaps I just don’t know about? If not, it’s something I would love to organise, do you think people would be interested?

What are your little tips for saving time when planning, in the classroom, and when marking?

For example, I went into my friend’s class and she was marking a pile of books that were stacked open at the page she wanted to mark, handed in that way by the pupils! I couldn’t believe that I wasn’t already doing that. It’s such a little thing, but it actually saves me time.

Reta is magic

I thought I’d do a little update because I know loads of people are curious about Reta and there’s so much mixed information about it.

I was on Mounjaro before and did really well on it, but eventually it just seemed to stop having the same effect. I’d been off it for well over a year after the prices went up in the UK and SheMed moved me onto Wegovy, which, for me, really didn’t do much at all.

After coming off Wegovy I put back on slightly less than half of the weight I’d lost and I could see I was on an upward trend again. I was getting really worried that I was just going to end up back where I started.

I started Reta on 30th June at 16st 10lb and today, 7th August, I’m 15st 2lb, so I’m 1st 8lb down.
I started very low, at 0.5 units on my syringe, and I’m currently on 3 units.

The biggest thing for me has been the food noise. It went basically straight away after the first injection. The exact same thing happened to me with Mounjaro. I know people say if it happens that quickly it must be placebo, but for me it absolutely wasn’t. I know what my own brain is like around food and it was just gone. Different people react differently and this is obviously how I react.

I’m generally only eating one proper meal a day, usually in the evening, but I’m still eating decent-sized portions. The difference is that what I actually want to eat has changed massively.

Last night, for example, I had a huge bowl of air-fried chicken breast with red pepper, red onion, broccoli, cauliflower and tomatoes, with a little olive oil, herbs and chilli, then feta, fresh parsley and lemon over the top. It looked like an enormous plate of food, but most of it was vegetables.

I used to also always crave wine and would drink two or three bottles of wine a week by myself in the house, I haven’t had wine for ages. Don’t miss it. I’m not yet feeling super full when eating, so I’m wondering if that will come soon. Having said that there have been times when I have thought I have had enough now and stopped eating, but on Mounjarro I remember it being like wow I cannot take one more bite .

I was lucky to find someone local selling it and, from the effects I’ve had, I do believe I’ve managed to get the genuine article. I know that is not something everyone can be sure of with grey-market stuff, and I know there are risks involved, so I’m not telling anyone else what they should do.

One thing I keep thinking about is how for years, whenever obesity was talked about on the news, there was always somebody saying there’s no magic pill, you just have to eat less and move more. And now I genuinely think, maybe there sort of is.

Not in the sense that you take an injection and then do whatever you like with no consequences, but in the sense that there is now a medicine that changes the thing that was making it so difficult in the first place. The constant hunger, the food noise, the feeling that your brain is always dragging you back towards food.

And I actually love that, because to me it is proof that obesity is not just about people being lazy or greedy or lacking willpower. There is clearly something going on in our brains, our hormones, our physiology, whatever combination of things it is, that makes some people much more likely to become obese than others.

The fact that there is now a medicine that can help with that is honestly amazing to me.
So far, for me, the difference has been massive. Obviously I’m thrilled with the weight loss, but the food noise disappearing has probably been the biggest thing of all.

What do you eat? How much variety?

I wouldn’t say my appetite has gone yet food noise has gone and I do feel full after food for longer. I was previously on Mounjaro top dose and it feels stronger early on on Reta. I’m only on my third dose. I took 0.5 last Monday 0.5 on Thursday and one yesterday which was Monday. I have lost 6lbs since last week.

I am eating the same thing all the time, but I like it and it feels healthy. The only time I eat something different is that the weekend when I go to my boyfriend’s and he cooks but he is cooking clean for me like steamed fish steamed veg.

My food every day has been a 2 chicken breast and prawn stirfry bulked up with one full packet of microwave rice then cabbage, carrots, tomato, leek, soy sauce, fish sauce, chilli crisp and lime juice. It makes about three portions one of which I take for lunch the following day to work. In the morning, all I am having is a skimmed milk flat white.

Is this okay? I know it’s not particularly varied but it feels like it’s all good stuff going in. ChatGPT counts my calories as being between 1200 to 1400 per day.

Is it the Reta that’s making me tired?

I’m only on my second week I took 0.5 last Monday 0.5 on Thursday and then I took 1 yesterday. I’ve lost 6lb in my first week which I know will be water mainly. But the last two days I’ve been really tired after I’ve eaten. I’ve stopped snacking altogether between meals it had pretty much immediate effect, I’m not getting the fullness during the time that I’m eating but I feel very satisfied after a meal and quite full for a long time, I wonder if it’s this fullness that is making me tired.

Also, I’m sorry for the TMI when I went to the toilet last night there was pretty much fully formed food still in it, I could very clearly pick out carrots, tomato, and cabbage is this normal 😆

One week experience

I took 0.5mg on Monday this week and pretty much instantly, within a few hours, food noise went. This was exactly the same experience that I had with Mounjaro the very first time I took it. I am absolutely terrible for always having food noise, to the extent where I can be sitting having had my tea and I just get the insatiable urge to go to the shops and get some sweets or chocolate or crisps. Crisps every day and I’m talking a whole bag of kettle chips or walkers sensations. But that has just gone. Someone said it must be a placebo effect because it can’t work that fast but it has been this way all week I took another 0.5 on Thursday. I felt hungry today at lunchtime having not had breakfast, but I feel like that was normal hunger because I hadn’t eaten it wasn’t food noise. What I haven’t had is the feeling of feeling full very quickly after eating a small amount, I had a huge Sunday dinner today and I enjoyed every mouthful without feeling guilty, I did not have a dessert which I normally would but I had no craving for it. So far it has just removed the food (and wine) noise. I will take another 0.5 tomorrow. I have lost 5lbs.

It’s amazing.

Is anybody else scared when taking it for the first time?

I have already taken it about two hours ago I don’t feel strange in anyway. I bought 30mg vial filled it up with the water and took 0.5.

I’m just a little nervous about taking it with everything you’ve seen the news about not knowing what’s in it, et cetera.

If it were going to have a bad effect on you how long would it take? I mean a bad effect in terms of things other than the general side effects. I have taken mounjaro and I’m expecting those sorts of side-effects.

Just looking for a bit of reassurance really, thank you.
