I used to think the perfect luxury mechanical watch was a myth. But after one and now two YM40s, I'm convinced the rest of the models and brands are just throwing darts in the dark.

The Yacht-Master 40 is the only sports piece with a rotating bezel that nails the golden ratio. I’ve cross-shopped the entire luxury market, and nothing comes even close to this combination of case thickness, lug-to-lug, durability, bracelet comfort, movement accuracy and wearability.

I owne/owned Omegas, Zeniths, IWCs, Tudors (BB58 GMT my 2nd favourite), JLC Polaris, 41mm Sub, GMT M2.

What do we think of this mod? Low-key Powerhouse or Looks Fake?

The only reason I bought this watch was because I saw people on this forum swapping their BB58 GMT bezel inserts with Steel Reef inserts. Naturally, I ended up on the Steel Reef website… and the second I saw this blue bezel insert, I was hooked instantly.

I always loved the BB58 GMT dimensions, the METAS certification, and the overall comfort of the watch, but I was never fully sold on the stock bezel color scheme. This blue completely changed the watch for me.

Funny enough, I actually ordered the bezel insert first… then went to my AD and bought the watch 😄

This morning I finally did the swap. I took my time, used the proper tools and press, followed the instructions carefully, and even 3D printed a bezel removal jig from Thingiverse for my press setup.

Honestly, with the correct tools and Steel Reef’s instructions, the whole process only took a couple of minutes.

I am absolutely over the moon with how this turned out. I own a Tudor P39 and four Rolexes, and I can already tell it is going to be a while before any of the others get much wrist time.

What a banger.
