From B.Com to Tech at 25: Need honest advice about MCA, placements, low board marks, and career transition ?

Hello everyone.

I need some honest advice because I'm feeling very confused about my next step.

I'm 25 years old and I'm trying to transition from a commerce background into the tech industry.

My academic background:

10th: 49.60%

12th: 55.38%

B.Com completed in 2025

I also completed a D.lib. course between 2020 and 2021.

My educational timeline looks something like this:

10th completed in 2018

12th completed in 2020

D.lib completed in 2021

B.Com completed in 2025

Planning to pursue MCA in 2026

Because of this timeline, I have some academic gaps, and I'm not sure how much they will affect my future.

Another important point is that I have zero coding experience.

I don't come from a B.Tech, BCA, or computer science background.

I also don't have any internships, software development experience, GitHub projects, or a technical portfolio.

My current options

Option 1: Regular MCA

I have been allotted a regular MCA college in Pune.

However, there are several concerns:

College timing is from 8 AM to 4 PM

75% attendance is compulsory

I will have to move away from home

Living expenses will increase

I will have less time for self-study and coding

The MCA fee is around ₹70,000 per year, plus an additional security deposit

The biggest issue is campus placements.

I recently learned that many companies use 10th and 12th marks as an eligibility filter during campus placements.

If that is true, then I may not even be eligible to sit for many placement drives.

If I cannot participate in campus placements, then I'm wondering whether moving to another city and spending a significant amount of money still makes sense.

Option 2: IGNOU (distance/open university)

I'm also considering pursuing an MCA through IGNOU.

This would give me much more time for coding and skill development.

However, I don't know how employers view an IGNOU MCA.

Option 3: An irregular college

I'm also considering a college where attendance is not mandatory and students only need to appear for examinations.

This would allow me to spend most of my time learning technical skills.

However, such colleges don't provide campus placements.

Option 4: Industry-oriented training programs

Several people working in the IT industry have advised me to focus on skills rather than depending entirely on a degree.

I was told to consider industry-oriented training programs in Hyderabad.

I spoke to someone from one of those institutes, and they said that before joining advanced programs related to AI, ML, or automation, I should first learn:

Python

C or C++

Basic programming concepts

I was also advised to consider fields such as:

Python development

Data science

SAP

SAP FICO

AI

Automation

The advice I received was:

Don't focus only on the degree. Focus on getting your foot into the industry first.

Work experience

I worked for a few months in 2025.

My responsibilities included:

Customer communication

Order processing

Returns management

Inventory tracking

Documentation

Email communication

Excel-based process management

I also started building an Excel-based tracking system for warehouse operations and inventory management.

However, I don't have formal documentation such as:

Salary slips

Offer letters

Appointment letters

PF records

So I'm not sure whether I can even count this as professional experience.

My biggest questions

How much do 10th and 12th marks actually matter after MCA?

If my board marks are below 60%, should I completely forget about campus placements?

Is an MCA still worth pursuing in my situation?

Should I choose a regular MCA, IGNOU, or an irregular college?

Should I focus more on self-study and industry training programs instead of depending on college?

How does off-campus hiring actually work?

Do people still get internships and entry-level jobs at 25 with a non-technical background?

If you were in my position, what would you do?

I'm looking for honest advice, especially from people who:

Transitioned from commerce to tech

Completed an MCA

Entered the industry through self-study

Found jobs through off-campus hiring

Thank you.

Do 10th and 12th marks affect MCA campus placements in India?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to take admission in an MCA program at Trinity College, Pune.

My academic profile is:

10th: 49.68%

12th: 55.38%

B.Com: 79.6%

I've spoken to a few working professionals, and some of them told me that many companies (especially during campus placements) require at least 60% in 10th and 12th. They said that even if I perform well in MCA, my resume might not be shortlisted because of my school marks.

My questions are:

Do 10th and 12th marks really matter during MCA campus placements?

How many companies still use a 60% eligibility criterion?

Are my chances of getting an on-campus job very low?

Should I focus more on off-campus opportunities and skill development instead?

I'd really appreciate responses from MCA students, recent graduates, and recruiters.

Thanks.
