Schotland trip

Hi

BMW I4 70kW.

snponly64.efi.vmw-hardwired.officialkey and tramp file reference

Still working on installing ESXi over LAN while using secure boot. Our servers don't support HTTP boot, so I need to do a LAN boot with DHCP and then TFTP and switch to HTTP. I finally got it working using the snponly64.efi.vmw-hardwired.officialkey from our autodeploy server.

I have subdirectories:
/vmware/8u3i
/vmware/902
When I put the snponly64.efi.vmw-hardwired.officialkey in each of those directories and set the dhcp option reservation to either http://<server>/vmware/8u3i/snponly64.efi.vmw-hardwired.officialkey or http://<server>/vmware/902/snponly64.efi.vmw-hardwired.officialkey, they will get loaded but they need a tramp file to continue. In the trampfile is the reference to the rest of the files for HTTP download.

Thing is, they ONLY look for the tramp file in the root of the images directories, which means that I can only have one tramp file pointing to only one installation.

Is there a way I can solve this in a different way?

ESX deployment with TFTP and secure boot

Found a lot of blog articles on PXE boot, kickstart deployment, etc, but I have a hard time finding a way to PXE boot UCS Blades for installation when secure boot is enabled. Closest I get is the recommendation to disable secure boot, install and then enable secure boot.

But in UCS that would changing the boot profile for the whole cluster which would cause "pending reboots".

I can do a full install with secure boot disabled and over tftp, but that is dead slow, taking almost over an hour for the automated install. Tried with the mboot.efi, tried with ipxe but I keep running into various errors.

If anyone has a good guide for this I'd be very greatful.

Advice needed: On flat rides after 30+ km little pains

When riding in hilly area I have almost none issues, but for example today when doing 40km on a relaxed flat ride, my butt hurts and a slight numbness in my hands and private parts. Also I'm always putting my head too far down in between my shoulders which I keep reminding myself about.

When riding a very hilly ride 80km / 1000D+ I have to remind myself when climbing to sit up more straight to prevent my back hurting.

Just not trained enough (1200km this year) or do I really need to change something?

For testing a 2 host cluster with some VMs and the first host is running VMs, second yet to be configured and in maintenance mode. When I have imported a json to the draft section and made the changes, I can't just save that. I have to run a pre-check and apply changes and if for example one host can't be put into maintenance as well, you have no option to save the draft as new config.

Previously with host profiles you just created a new profile, made the changes and then remediate them when you have time for it.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but it looks as if you can't save a draft without applying it.

Creating a new desired state config and keep on running into this error:

/host-specific/6473987b-78a3-ec11-0000-00000000000e/esx/network/vmknics/0/mac_from_user
MAC address must be specified because 'vmk0' is using user defined MAC address mode.

I have one host as the reference host. This host has been running for some while now, long before I started with a desired state config for that cluster. I set the cluster to desired state config and import a config from the reference host 5B001.

Using PXE boot + Kickstart + Python I deploy a new host that is automatically added to the cluster and is then remediated. Unfortunately this step fails because of the error mentioned above. The error says there is no MAC specified since it wants to use "Mac_from_User", but that is not true since in the desired config, it is specified as:

      "mac_mode": "PNIC_BASED",
      "nic": "vmnic0",

I don't understand why it is unable to overwrite this config and keeps failing.

After using stateless auto deploy with hostprofiles since 5.1, we're now moving to installed hosts with desired state configuration on the clusters.

What confuses me is that when I import a host configuration to the cluster into the draft section and then want to save this, there is only "apply" as option which also immediately tries to make the changes. Yes it does wait for hosts to be in maintenance mode but I don't want it to even try and go that way because often I'm not quite done yet. Then there is the "Review Impact" page the has a close / back / remediate button. When pressing close it doesn't really feel like it saved, the GUI doesn't give me that feedback. So I have no real confirmation on what is now saved. Mainly because I also endup in the Draft section again.

Do others have the same confusion?

I recently saw the new peaks feature and though I like the idea, I have some remarks on it:
- I'm red-green colorblind and I have to really put in an effort to see the difference between bagged and unbagged. If I screenshot and zoom in that screenshot I see the difference in color.

- Why is the legenda on the left (webversion) per country?
- Are these different categories auto-generated or are climbs added manually by the team, because in my region (South of Limburg in the Netherlands), I'm missing quite a lot of peaks. Although, maybe these are not missing by the algoritme peaks is using. I had to lookup what "prominence" is, see image, and maybe that is why a lot of very interesting climbs don't show? For example in my region the Keutenberg is one of many examples that are missing (for road cycling).
