Aperture and Autofocus

I'm sure a lot of you know this but I haven't seen it discussed much.

During my testing

  • AF-S focusses with aperture wide open (at least to start with) when you press the shutter button
  • AF-C focusses with aperture at the setting you'll take the shot at.

So on a slow lens like xc 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6. I think this is why I find af-c really unusable in lower light conditions. Not because the focus mechanism is particularly slow, but because of two results of this approach and the fact I typically stop down at least a stop for sharpness:

  1. The af-c has less light to confirm focus and struggles
  2. The depth of field is larger at smaller apertures and hence the af-c hunts a lot more.

I think this is why I've found af-c a lot more effective on the Viltrox 35mm f/1.7 vs xc 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6.

Basically it seems at smaller aperatures and lower light af-c performance drops off a lot more rapidly than af-s in my limited experience.

Feel free to correct me or let me know your thoughts.

I guess the conclusions are:

  1. If it is low light try to avoid af-c
  2. if you have to use af-c try shooting wide open if possible
  3. if af-c is frustrating you might get far better results with a brighter lens

Darktable running very slow - Too many images in a collection

Have about 250+ images in a collection and Darktable is running very slow. Every time I make an adjustment it gives me "working..." for about 10 seconds. Is there any easy way to fix this. Do I have to move my images into different folders in windows to fully break the link?

Everyone's current thoughts on autofocus

Just want to get everyone's thoughts on autofocus at the moment. What modes work? Is something still seriously wrong?

My thoughts:

I got an x-s20. I didn't think I'd be disappointed cause I haven't had a Sony or another camera from the last 10 years. Surely even if Fujifilm isn't at the top of the game (which I knew going in) it will still not be a noticeable disappointment. I never really thought much about autofocus with my old camera (7d mark ii). Well I'm not as sure now.

Struggle to keep my 4 year old in focus. I still hopeful with more practice and using af-c, wide/tracking with or without face detect (not sure what's best), I may get some ok performance, but I'm looking at the video below and a lot of it feels real.

It just seems to lag and miss too often. Even taking a photo of a static objects shows clear evidence that the af-c just hunts and hunts in big steps. Seems kinda crazy. Taking a photo of a static object with af-c it is noticeable that maybe only 1 out of 3 is tack sharp and full in focus.

Everything else is great and I think without pixel peeking and reasonable depth of field I should be content with what I got. I can't help think something is terribly wrong with fujifilm's autofocus watching a video like that.

Large outdoor Chess Sets for public play in Perth & Surrounding Areas

Specifically I'm talking about the ones where you have pavers making a chess board and chess pieces as big as a toddler.

Searching online there seems to be mention of a few but none of them are really panning out as still available. I've looked at the following but have either worked out they are no longer operating or otherwise a doubt they are due to a lack of confirmation:

  1. Walyalup Koort (Fremantle Visitor Centre) - Confirmed no longer.
  2. Willow Pond/Rafters Cafe - Seems to be fully closed down
  3. City of Perth Library - Didn't know what I was talking about
  4. Perth Cultural Centre - Not sure where it was located and no mention of it on the State Library of Western Australia website so presume it isn't them.
  5. The Maze (now Perth's Outback Splash) Bullsbrook - I think this one actually would still be operational but now it is rebranded as Perth's Outback Splash it seems to be closed for all of winter so it would only be an option in summer. Also not sure if you can play it without buying a full admission to the water park.

Still to investigate:

  • Melville Civic Square Library - There is an outdoor chess board there but I've never seen it in use. I can find one post with a picture of it being used from 20th July 2020 but the post was a Throwback Thursday so no indication they still have that there even back in 2020.

I'm not surprised that information is hard to find online as it seems things like this often are. Also not surprised that venues try this and get over the novelty of it and people damage the pieces so they give up on it.

How should I be approaching remove haze from a bright window bleeding across (Before/After)

Zoomed in for effect. This is the corner of an image I was working with. I used a mask in darktable, an intersection of a gradient and brush mask and then used the tone equaliser globally and with the mask to bring it back in a bit.

Not entirely happy with the result so I'm looking for any suggestions on how this problem should be addressed in post-production.

Samsung kids stopped working this morning - demands update can't update

Is there anyway to downgrade Samsung kids? It has worked on my s21 for ages and today it said a new update is available and to start a download and it fails due to an error.

Guess all things come to an end. Especially in this world where you're forced to keep updating stuff and into obsolescence.

I presume it is failing either because I need to update system software or my phone is too old. I really didn't want to update Samsung kids cause I think they've removed some of the games my daughter likes.

I'm kind of devastated about this.

claims to be version 12.7.00.5

Looking to improve my handwriting

I started off here neater than usual and then as my hand cramped (holding the pen too tight?) I started to loosen up and write larger and in my normal style. I feel the legibility of my writing is OK compared to how messy it looks on a page, but I've felt self-conscious about my handwriting for a while and would like it to look neater. I find my "style" changes a bit from day to day.

This is a random excerpt from Wikipedia.

Is practicing with template sheets (where you copy the writing above) helpful at my stage? I searched for some but didn't find anything particularly good online for free. I saw some auto generating ones that use computer fonts, which again I'm not sure if that really helps.

The other option is just mindful practice.

So there was an eraser on top of the piano key cover and when it was pushed back it fell into the back area. Any idea how to get it out?

Have a 16mm-35mm EF f/4L ... It's my father in law's. I broke the protect filter on it with use.

I've now learnt that these filters are the ones canon say you require to get the weather sealing. I'm sure that is 99% marketing/CYA. However, I'm tempted to buy genuine because it isn't my lens and I'd feel somewhat bad if it got damaged and it could have been avoided with a genuine filter.

The cost is actually less but I'm pretty sus if they can actually source the genuine one as it is currently on back order.

Any thoughts? If it is complete BS or not and I should just get a similar hoya filter?

This is the genuine filter: https://www.camerahouse.com.au/canon-77reg-regular-filter

Another filter to consider might be:

Or cheaper
