Game soundtracks aren’t about the music

Lately, I’ve come to an unpleasant realization. It feels like all these vinyl and CD releases for games are mostly just for collecting or nostalgia.

I decided that, for myself, I wanted to choose a vinyl not based on a game I already knew or had played, but purely based on the music. So I went to Laced and started listening, in order, to all the tracks from all the records for all the games they had available. And I came to a few disappointing conclusions.

Every game only has a handful of tracks that truly stay with you. Often it’s the main theme and a few other tracks that add some variety. Everything else tends to be fairly uninspired music built around certain motifs for specific in-game situations, like combat music or ambient background pieces. In other words, 95% of the tracks are quite monotonous, and you probably wouldn’t recognize them if you didn’t already know what you were listening to.

A very telling example is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. I haven’t played the game, but I’ve repeatedly heard that it has a phenomenal soundtrack. And that’s true: “Alicia,” “Gustave,” “Lumiere,” and a few others are the core that the whole soundtrack rests on. But everything else is just standard orchestration without vocals, and it doesn’t really leave a lasting impression.

There are exceptions, though. For example, Bloodborne or The Witcher 3. In those soundtracks, every track feels like a completely different piece of music with its own motif. Bloodborne only has three records across two releases, and every single track feels like something that goes straight into your soul.

We buy a specific vinyl release for a specific game because the game is familiar to us.
I can’t speak for everyone, but I think that’s how it works for most people. For example, while I was listening through everything on Laced, I discovered a game I knew absolutely nothing about whose soundtrack really impressed me: Firmament. At the same time, I found a game I love a lot, but whose soundtrack didn’t impress me at all: Resident Evil 2.

And yet, in the end, I still really want to buy the Resident Evil 2 release, while something is stopping me from buying the Firmament one. I think that when we buy a game soundtrack, we’re not really buying it because of the music itself. We’re buying it to reconnect with the emotions we felt while playing that game.

Complete soundtrack releases on 4+ records are purely for collectors.
Very often, even two-record releases already start to feel weak, despite a few great tracks at the beginning. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is an example of that. And if you go for the biggest edition, then 99% of the soundtrack is basically filler.

Honestly, these conclusions have made me sad, and I’ve suddenly lost the desire to keep collecting video game soundtracks. If you disagree with me, please convince me otherwise, because otherwise I think I’m going to stop buying vinyl.(

Return to Silent Hill Exclusive

For those who have listened to the original Silent Hill soundtracks, would you recommend buying the recently announced vinyl release of Silent Hill: Return to Silent Hill? Is it worth trying to find older vinyl releases?

Launched my duck on the PH, would love feedback

Hey everyone!

I launched Spycost on Product Hunt today, and we’re still holding the #2 spot.

Spycost is a price tracking app that helps people avoid fake discounts by showing price history, price changes, and whether a deal is actually worth it.

I built it because I kept falling for “limited-time offers” myself and wanted a clearer way to decide when to buy.

The #3 product is getting very close, so any honest feedback, comments, or support would mean a lot today.

Recommend an alternative to UpWork

I'm annoyed by UpWork's internal currency (conections). Not only do they charge a huge commission for every order, but I also have to fork over internal currency just to be able to apply for a position. Are there any decent alternatives to UpWork?

I Got Tired of Fake Discounts, So I Built a Price Tracker

https://preview.redd.it/8vip2es0xk3h1.png?width=6606&format=png&auto=webp&s=110f7c5470788511c07bff70b340eb4c1c75bf27

Last Black Friday, I bought a PS5 Pro, a 4K TV, chargers, VR glasses, and a bunch of other console accessories for almost $2,000. Before buying, I did the math and thought I had saved over $1,000 compared to the “regular” prices.

But after Black Friday ended and the hype cooled down, I checked what all that same electronics gear cost later. And honestly, I was pissed. Most of it wasn’t much more expensive than what I paid during the sale. Meanwhile, the “original” prices used to calculate those big discounts were way higher than they should’ve been.

So I started digging into this, and turns out it’s not some rare exception. It happens all the time. Our perception of price is incredibly easy to manipulate: raise the “old” price, slap on a discount badge, add urgency, create fake scarcity, and suddenly something feels like a deal. Even the difference between $9.99 and $10.00 can seriously affect how people buy. There are entire marketing playbooks built around this stuff.

That’s what pushed me to build a mobile app that helps you see what’s actually happening with prices.

That app is Spycost.

You add any product from any online store by pasting its URL, and Spycost starts tracking it for you. It notifies you when the price changes, and also when a product goes out of stock or comes back in stock. It keeps the full price history too, so when it’s finally time to buy, you have the context to know whether it’s a real deal or just a nicely packaged fake discount.

For me, it turned into a kind of smart wishlist. I add the more expensive things I’m thinking about buying, and instead of just sitting there, they’re actively being tracked.

Spycost has a permanent free plan, so anyone can try it. If you give it a shot, I’d really appreciate your thoughts, feedback, or feature ideas.

Do you track the prices of your competitors' products?

I conducted a survey among paid users of my application. This is a mobile application that allows you to track prices for any online products from any online store. You receive notifications when our algorithm detects a price change, discount or fake price manipulation. Among the 10 users who passed the survey, 3 reported that they use the application not for personal purposes but for their e-commerce business. They started to track the prices of their competitors' products and thereby adjust their own prices for their products.

This is an interesting signal because this process could be adapted separately for business requirements. For example, I can create a plugin that you could embed in your crm system and automatically respond to changes in the price of your competitors' products. Or I can create an API that you could also use for your price tracking purposes. What do real e-commerce owners think about this?
