'Fragged: Double Tap' my post-post-apocalyptic skirmish game :) A year in review

G’day everyone, I hope you don’t mind if I do some self-promotion, and a little public self-reflection (for those who like to glimpse at how the sausage is made).

----------

A post-post-apocalyptic sci-fi skirmish game set in the richly detailed universe of the Fragged Empire ttRPG, Double Tap emphasises tactical decision-making, clever use of terrain and reaction attacks. Unlike many miniature games, Double Tap employs a flexible action and reaction system that keeps both players engaged at all times. With its deep lore, customisable forces, and an expanding range of miniatures, Double Tap offers an immersive experience that rewards strategy and respects your time.

Players: 2.
Duration: 90min.
Game Area: 30”x30”, Dense terrain.
Miniatures: 32mm heroic, Approximately 8 miniatures per player, STL files available.
Rules: Simple, Fast, Scalable complexity based on your unit choices, Variable objectives.
Turns: Alternating activation (activate ANY unit during your Turn), 20 turns per player per game.

A year in review:

I’m mainly known for my ttRPGs, but its been interesting to put a miniature skirmish game out into the wild conventions here in Australia and online. I’m happy to say that I’m actually making money off sales (which is nice!), but it has been far harder than I expected to peel people away from ‘their game’ to try something new.

Conventions have been super helpful, as they give me a chance to refine my sales pitch and demo the game to people. A few YouTubers have briefly covered my game, which was great for sales.

I’m finding that my customers are primarily 3 types of people: Those who are already a fan of my RPG universe, those who love to try new indie games, and those who like the idea of Infinity but have bounced hard off their dense rules.

My action system and simple core rules (just a dozen page long rules book, which is mostly diagrams and examples) has been a big draw, as has the small game area (3ft x 3ft) and scalable tactical depth (you can take  more complex units if you want). But I think my lack of product boxes is a drag.

My future plans: continue to expand my range of STLs, create ‘starter’ boxes to sell at conventions, and slowly gear up for a  roster expansion/update next year. I also know I need to reach outside of my country.

As an Australian I know my reach overseas will always be limited, but as an indie creator I don't need a large audience to sustain my project. But one day I would love to get over to GenCon or Adepticon.

(And yes, all of my art is human-made!)

Sneak peak at my new Double Tap 'road terrain' :) Kaltoran vs Legion

Had a quick game of Double Tap skirmish game with a friend today using my new 'road' terrain (I will post up better pictures soon!). His Horde force vs my Kaltoran force.

The game turned when my Dirtbag Vagabond ended up rolling 16d6 😛 Good old exploding dice ftw!

Thaumaturges are masters of the arcane arts...

Thaumaturges are masters of the arcane arts, be they Celestial, Fiendish or urban. Bending the fabric of reality and fate in ways that others can not. The source of their power is a defining aspect of their nature: most seize direct control over the laws of reality, while some forge dark pacts with Fiends for unholy might and a few pray to the Celestials for divine fire and protection.

Tethered Thaumaturges tend to spend a large amount of time poring over ancient tomes of knowledge and seeking out arcane relics. This often tempts them down dark paths that isolate them from other members of the Order. Ancient Thaumaturges have created vast libraries of insight for future Tethered to study, rows upon rows of books and scrolls on the arcane arts, monsters and divine entities. Unfortunately, these labyrinthine chambers of knowledge are rarely well-organised, frequently damaged and occasionally seized by greedy mortal mages.

  • +1 Nature, Production and High Society.
  • +2 to all Arcane Rolls of one Source (Celestial, Fiendish or Urban).
  • Once per Session: Add a Positive or Negative Unexpected Outcome of your choice to an Arcane Roll.
  • Always have at least 1 Corruption.

Fragged & The Mad Looter Conversation

G'day all.

It has always been hard to find recorded conversations with RPG game designers talking about their creative process (I often find myself listening to writers - as there are lots of them and they used their gift with words to articulate the creative process well). There is lots of content from and for GMs, but not from those who make and sell products. And those few recorded conversations from game designers are often geared towards marketing their product.

I have limited video skills, but I want to put more voices out there. So on short notice I (Fragged, full-time creator) and James (The Mad Looter, part-time creator of adventures for Pathfinder 2e) recorded a conversation talking about our work, art, AI, the process and a little more.

I hope you find this conversation helpful, even if its just to hear how two creators think and talk about their craft. I hope to do more of these.

"The grave calls for us all, and loudest for the immortal."

This is Gideon Hallow - a time-travelling zombie who knows the apocalypse is coming, because he has lived through it!

He is an example of the 'Deranged' Archetype - they're tough, resistant to the mental strain of warping reality, and have access to a range of whacky Traits (including the ability to make foes 'never having existed').

"All Districts in this region were once dominated by the golem armies of the Rhun Empire. Which all came to nought, for they are yet more rubble beneath our pavestones and basements. Just as we will be to future Districts."

Aeternum 2 is going to keep all of the lore from FA1, and all of the best art. I especially like this illustration, as it inspired me to create the technomagical Rhun Empire... and its always handy to have a fallen old empire in a campaign!

This subreddit has a bad rep in the indie creator scene :(

G'day all.
I know this can be a difficult topic to discuss.

Before I get to the point I want to say that 100% see the bind Mods are in, as many indie creators are desperate to promote their work (increasingly difficult due to enshitification of social media, communities retreating into online silos, and just so many new games being made), Reddit has rules (they want creators to buy adds), and many indie creators not communicating in good faith (ie: they just so happen to mention their game in a comment, or they just so happen to ask 'does anyone know of X super specific type of game?' that just so happens to align with what their game is).

Its a mess, we all get it.

I guess I just came here to let you know that this Subreddit has earned a bad reputation in many indie creator circles as a place that only likes a few very specific indie darlings, and is actively hostile to new creators. And not just because of Mods, but also because of how the audience here talks. So often indie games are ragged on here, the slightest slips by a creator talking about their work gets their comment removed, etc...

RPGs are unlike ANY other game hobby because the steps from consumer to creator are so damn close. Every indie creator is just a GM who has taken their passion to the next step, just as many GMs are just a Player who has taken their passion to the next step. For me, I LOVE to see how the sausage is made, I WANT to hear from creators about their processes and what they're working on. Just as I want to hear about GMs and Players about their process and what they're games.

I don't have an answer for this. I don't know where creators can go to connect with new audiences, I don't know how to Mod a large subreddit in a way that keeps it healthy. I guess my only suggestion is for maybe a weekly 'Indie Game Free-for-all Discussion' post?

I just hate to hear so much negativity from creators towards this Sub :( Bums me out.

"After ten thousand thousand generations have each walked ten billion billion years towards the horizon, they shall stand no closer to the city’s edge than whence they began." - Maps for my gothic-horror RPG.

Aeternum is the name of both city and all material existence. Unfathomably large, our eternal urban expanse stretches out beyond all horizons. It is so large that not even deranged madmen claim to have reached its limits, and so all-encompassing that humans can not imagine an existence outside of a city.

Whenever a building in Aeternum is ruined it will often be replaced by the Divine Architects - small glittering creatures that appear out of thin air who can materialise massive buildings within a day. While this saves the people of Aeternum a lot of effort, the Architects are not beholden to, or mindful of, the plans of man, and will often replace buildings with structures of entirely different design. This regularly creates problems with surrounding roads that do not align with existing ones, or buildings not used for purpose; such as multiple families living in a cathedral-like structure due to the destruction of their previous residences and the subsequent mismatched reconstruction.

Architects do not clear ruins, they simply build over the old. Countless years of this practice have pushed the remains of ancient Aeternum lower as newer structures are raised atop the old. As the city sprawls endlessly across every horizon, so too does its Undercity plunge endlessly downward. It is a labyrinth of caverns, sewers and mine shafts, with its own exotic ecosystems of creatures and lost subterranean Districts.

From the city’s great spires, one may gain a faint glimpse into how tiny they are compared to the endless urban expanse. From even the highest vantage point the buildings stretch out forever in all directions. From above Aeternum appears as a giant puzzle, its pieces divided by the massive walls that separate the many nation-like Districts of the city. The walls are topped with ancient statues and towers that keep a silent vigil over the people below. Wide streets feed into huge gates; the only points of passage through the walls from one District to another.

--------------

Aeternum was a setting that I first published many years ago, and it feels nice to be getting closer to a 2nd edition. It started out as a very Bloodborn-like setting, but altered to work as a ttRPG (lots of NPCs, focus on teamplay, etc...).

The maps are all done by me, and my illustrations are done by a range of artists (Matthew Mizak produced the illustration in this post). I have been thinking about producing another map... and super detailed double-page spread filled with isometric buildings, to help give an ever better sense of scale.

"A violent and dark gothic ttRPG that plunges immortal PCs into the endless city of Aeternum to fight vile Fiends and otherworldly foes."
