I’m an Algerian author, and I’ve been working on my debut novel, 'Specters of Rihab'. The story is a psychological mystery set in Algeria, where the 'ghosts' aren't necessarily supernatural entities, but rather the manifestations of unresolved trauma and the weight of the past that lingers in specific places.

My challenge has been finding the right balance—I want to ground the atmosphere in my local culture, but I’m worried about relying on common tropes or making it feel too specific for a global audience to grasp.

For those of you who write about settings or cultures deeply tied to their history, how do you handle this? How do you make the setting feel like a 'character' that haunts the protagonist without overshadowing the actual mystery?

I am an Algerian writer, and I wanted to translate these questions into my debut novel, 'Specters of Rihab'. This isn't your typical horror or drama; I’ve tried to weave psychological mystery into an Algerian setting, exploring the secrets and untold stories buried within our daily reality.

كاين وجع من وقت مراهقتي مازال يتبع فيا.. وقتها حبيت شخص 'قوين' (مثلي الجنس)، وأنا في هداك الوقت كنت نية وما نعرف أصلاً واش تعني هاد الكلمة ولا كانت قاع في بالي. الصدمة الكبيرة كي فقت بلي يتماشى مع الرجال، والأعظم منها كيفاش حب يستغلني ويجيبلي صحابو.. بلا ما ندخل في باقي التفاصيل المقرفة.

واللي زاد الطين بلة وعقد عليا العيشة، هي ظروفنا؛ دارنا بيت قصديري، بلاصة مكشوفة، الخصوصية منعدمة والهدرة تدخل وتخرج من كل جيهة. هاد البنادم وجماعتو يستغلوا في هاد الوضع ويضغطوا عليا بشتى الطرق، يحوسوا يبينولي 'باصة' باش يخلوني ديما مرعوبة وفي بعضايا.

والمشكلة الكبيرة لي تقتل، هي عائلتي لي في الدار.. مش دايريلي حساب ومام هوما ما صدقونيش وما وقفوش معايا. لقيت روحي نعاني وحدي من سحر تعطيل وتشويه سمعة وصل لكل قنت في ولاية بسكرة كاملة.. لدرجة أي حد يجي لبسكرة ويخالط غاشيها يسمع نفس الكلام والظلم لي طالع عليا. مخي حبس وتعبت من هاد العيشة لي كامل مش قدقد

وأنا علابالي بلي أي حد يسمع حكايتي راح يتساؤل في راسو ألف سؤال وسؤال: علاه هاد الشيء كامل صاري معايا؟ واش كاين كاع ورا هاد الحقد والظلم؟ وعلاه حتى واحد ما حب يفهم الحقيقة؟ هاد الأسئلة هي بيدها لي راهي تاكل فيا الداخل وتزيد في حيرتي.
