realistic pov/lesson as an intl applicant to US this year

it's been awhile since all the US decisions came out. Here are the things I learned tailored specifically to an intl applicant and may go for domestic as well:

  1. Money is everything. Money gives you resources, money gives you connections, money allows you to explore early with more ease. Having money to pay for tuition without aid is such a blessing as your chances will be wayy better (esp as an intl) as very few intl students get selected with aid. I find people who get into ivy leagues are from elite high schools in the province with significant connections and exposure to opportunities and live luxurious lives. I do not want to discredit them as I know they work really hard, but I also know others who have also worked just as hard, asked for aid, had less resources, and did not face the same outcome they deserve. if you are applying with the intent to ask for aid, don't expect much.

  2. you are never dreaming big enough. it was until grade 11 until i realized all of my ecs are mid. the same shit. student council, deca, and some clubs/volunteer. although i did grow a lot with these roles and i built my leadership and capabilities, i was way too overconfident abt myself and realized too late. any ec i did beyond that time was pointless and too late. dream big and find things that are unconventional and unique to you. it's probably more enjoyable too.

  3. prepare early. esp the SATs/APs. Did not do this and i fucked up. Do NOT go test-optional.

I screwed so many things up but I am very grateful. I still got into a wonderful school in my country with excellent intl outlook. I am thankful to have experiences this kind of process to learn these things and I hope this post gives potential applicants (you) more insight.

genuinely how do y'all take notes in university

ik this question sounds kinda stupid, but i’m entering UBC Sauder this fall and i’ve always wondered how note-taking actually works in university 😭

like, lectures are apparently 2–3 hours long and seem way more like one-sided prof lectures compared to high school classes. how do you:

- know what’s actually important?

- keep up with the pace of the lecture?

- avoid spending hours re-organizing notes after class?

- deal with classes where profs barely post notes/slides?

also what apps/devices do people actually use? i’ve heard everything from iPads to laptops to handwritten notes and i genuinely can’t tell what works best.

does your approach also change depending on the subject? like:

- math/calculus/statistics

vs

- more qualitative courses like marketing, commerce, org behaviour, etc.

would appreciate literally any advice from current uni students because i feel weirdly unprepared for this part specifically...

Quick survey on “woke-washing" advertising and brand activism

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfVK3ZuMc0Np9lqfypO5zef5czy4ViLt-JV0cspWdpxjx0RCw/viewform?usp=dialog

Hey everyone! We’re conducting a short anonymous survey for a Global Research Project about brand activism, social-issue advertising, and how online environments influence public perception of companies.

The survey is completely anonymous and takes around 2–3 minutes. We’d really appreciate responses from anyone interested. Thanks!

i got 9 offers (commerce) here's the breakdown

Average: low-to-mid 90s throughout Grade 12 so far

ECs: A mix of leadership roles both inside and outside of school, with a focus on student initiatives, community involvement, and mentorship. Around 200 volunteer hours. I’d rather not get too specific publicly but feel free to PM if you want more details.

Accepted:

- U of T Rotman Commerce (first round)

- UTM Commerce/Management (first round)

- U of T Scarborough Management & International Business (april)

- UBC Sauder (march)

- Western BMOS (feb)

- Western Social Sciences (jan-feb)

- Queen’s Economics (dec-jan)

- McMaster Business I (dec)

- McMaster Economics (jan-feb)

Rejected:

- Western Ivey AEO/HBA. Honestly wasn’t expecting this one since I thought I was competitive, but this cycle seems super unpredictable. It's okay, though!

Still Waiting:

- Queen’s Commerce. I got "blank" recently but I have no idea if it means anything this late in the cycle.

I hope this sheds some perspective! Good luck to those waiting for more offers. I am really grateful to have gotten most of my offers. My word advice to those who really want Ivey AEO or Queen's Commerce, make sure your ECs are almost irreplaceable. Not all of them, but at least have one unique thing that can make you stand out against the sea of competitive, yet similar applicants. But at the same time, it still don't guarantee anything so keep your options wide open. Feel free to ask me anything!
