Follow up to previous post - why is there so much slack in my top stitch!

I swear I am at my wits end with this one peeps. Please save me?

Edit: you guys aren't gonna believe this, but it was threaded wrong. The last clip the thread feeds through before reaching the needle, I had it feeding through the clip on the right side of the needle, but I fed it through the left side and now it works.

Sewing machine was working fine, suddenly bottom stitch is always a rats nest?? +Other issues

Just started a new project with my trusty thrifted sewing machine after oiling it for the first time. The first stitch went great, but on the second stitch trying to backstitch made a birds nest every time. Now after hours of troubleshooting, my stitches still look like this and I'm not sure what I'm still doing wrong. Fresh 75/11 needle, 100% cotton twill, new polyester thread, and fully clean. Where do I start?
